Is freedom of speech necessary in a free society?
【初看这个题目，还是有点小难的。比较难以构思出切题的Idea，在写的时候也比较考验大家的词汇语法基本功。由于题目较为抽象，所以对于大家的英语表达能力考试一个不小的考验。那么我们先来看一下，为什么下面这位烤鸭，能得到8分的高分？】

There has been considerable debate over the role of free speech in a free society over the last decades. Those who advocate free speech believe that it is the single most important political right of citizens in a civilize civilized society while others object to absolute freedom of speech. I believe that free speech should be protected except extreme circumstances. (This is unclear. If you mean ‘except in special extreme circumstances’ then because you have said this in your introduction, the reader is expecting you to explain what circumstances you mean exactly in the body of your essay. Or perhaps you mean free speech should be protected ‘in all circumstances’ in which case you are just expressing a strong view on the importance of free speech)

The freedom of speech is important at all levels in a society and it is the most significant for governments. It tells the government what citizens think and want, and the government may be in a dangerous situation if it does not care about this. This is how the communist regimes of Eastern Europe were toppled in the 1980s and the same is happening again in other regions of the world today. The government that muzzles free speech runs a risk of pushing its citizens to rebel.

Furthermore, many activities are meaningless without free speech. Without it no political action is possible and no resistance to injustice and oppression is possible either. Without it elections would become empty talk because policies of contestants become known to the public and become responsible responsive to public opinion only by virtue of free speech. Also, between elections the freely expressed opinion of citizens help restrain oppressive rules. Without this freedom, it is futile to expect political freedom or consequently economic freedom.

In conclusion, I believe that free speech is a basic and valuable characteristic of free society and it cannot be underestimated. It may be challenging for the government to allow differences of opinion out into the open, however, the consequences of restricting free speech are likely to be more damaging in the longer term.
