In some cities in the world, cars are replacing bicycles. In other cities, however, people are choosing to ride bicycles rather than to drive cars. What are the reasons for these developments? Which development do you think is better?

It has become increasingly common of cars replacing bicycles in developing countries, and vice versa in developed ones around the world. There is certainly no doubt that urbanization has been a key cause in this phenomenon; however, I strongly believe that the replacement of cars for bicycles is a much better development.
Urbanization has allowed developing cities to expand significantly that has resulted in the need for cars, and simultaneously caused more traffic congestion in developed nations that is conversely easier for cyclists. On one hand, the growth in emerging cities like Vietnam has increased the need for cars to travel longer distances as its built environment has boomed, which has seen to the replacement of bicycles. On the other hand, bicycles have been replacing cars especially in developed cities like Melbourne, and in particular the CBD where it is more convenient to cycle than to drive due to traffic congestion. It is hence because of urbanization that these developments have occurred.
As we are becoming more aware of environmental issues that cars have caused, I definitely believe that choosing to ride bicycles over driving cars is a far better development. The burning of fossil fuels to power cars is a main source of global warming and rising sea levels. Cycling on the other hand is entirely dependent on human energy and does not cause any environmental pollution that harms the ecosystem. It has been estimated that cycling to work rather than driving would save approximately 1000kg of greenhouse gas emissions each year in Melbourne and furthermore decrease the growing traffic congestion. For environmental reasons, I thus believe that the replacement of cars is definitely the better situation.
In conclusion, from the points above, the cars replacing bicycles and vice versa in cities all over the world points to the rise of urbanization. Taking the environment into consideration, I wholeheartedly believe that cycling over driving is a far superior outcome.
