● Lake colours are classified as ‘organic’ (cosmetic colours are classified as either organic or inorganic). This is confusing due to the fact that originally they were derived from ‘coal tar’ (organic coal sources), however, these days the ‘organic’ colours are synthetic. Inorganic colours are composed of metallic compounds derived from natural sources (clay and mineral deposits). Inorganic colours are not thought to pose the same risks as ‘organic’ colours. The problem with inorganic colours is they do not offer the same range of shades and bright colours as synthetically-manufactured ‘organic’ colours do. This is very confusing for consumers, who assume ‘organic’ is safer.

● All lake colours have been linked to allergic reactions, skin irritations, nervous system toxicity, reproductive system disruption and even cancer.

● Synthetically-enhanced colours may contain heavy metal salts that can penetrate the skin.

● These synthetically-enhanced colours may contain heavy metal salts which can penetrate into the skin, and is the reason for why many countries have banned them.
