In honor of Women’s History Month, please join us for an evening discussion on the role of women in journalism on Tuesday, March 14 at 6:30pm at the Beijing American Center. U.S. Embassy spokesperson, Mary Beth Polley, will moderate a conversation with Newsweek’s Beijing Bureau Chief Melinda Liu and The Associated Press’ Greater China news director Gillian Wong to discuss their experiences working for major international news outlets and how they went beyond reporting to become leaders in the newsroom.
Award-winning foreign correspondent Melinda Liu has worked in Beijing as Newsweek’s Bureau Chief since November 1998. Liu had opened the Beijing Bureau in early 1980 – becoming Newsweek’s first China-based correspondent since 1949 – and resided in Beijing until 1982. She has also been based in Washington D.C. and Hong Kong, and has reported from multiple conflict zones. In 2006, she won the Shorenstein journalism award in recognition of her reporting on Asia.
Gillian Wong was appointed as The Associated Press’ Greater China news director, based in Beijing, in early 2016. She has been reporting from Beijing since 2008 and was previously a technology reporter with The Wall Street Journal. Prior to that Wong was a correspondent with the AP in Beijing and Singapore for about a decade. Wong has also been sent to Myanmar, Bangladesh, Malaysia, and South Korea to cover disasters both natural and human-made.
