Dear August,

亲爱的八月：

Welcome to the world! Your mom and I are so excited to see who you will become. 

欢迎来到这个世界！我和你妈妈迫不及待地想要知道你会成长为一个怎样的人。

When your sister was born, we wrote a letter about the world we hoped she and now you will grow up in — a world with bettereducation, fewer diseases, stronger communities, and greater equality. 

你姐姐出生的时候，我们给她写了一封信，告诉她我们希望她在怎样的一个世界里成长。现在，你也将要在这个我们希冀中的世界里成长。在这个世界里，教育更完善，疾病更少，社会更团结，也更公平。

We wrote that with all the advances inscience and technology, your generation should live dramatically better livesthan ours, and we have a responsibility to do our part to make that happen.

我们写道，因为科学和技术的进步，你们这一代人的生活应当远远好于我们，我们有责任将这个愿景实现。

Even though headlines often focus on what’s wrong, we still believe these positive trends will win out. We’re optimists about your generation and the future.

虽然人们经常关注负面消息，但我们仍相信进步的趋势会占上风。我们对你们这一代人、对未来都十分乐观。

But rather than write about growing up, we want to talk about childhood. The world can be a serious place. That’s why it’s important to make time to go outside and play. 

不过，相较于成长的话题，我们还是更想跟你说说童年。世界终究是个严肃的地方，所以抓紧时间出去玩耍很重要。

You will be busy when you’re older, so I hope you take time to smell all the flowers and put all the leaves you want in your bucket now.

一旦长大，你就会变得很忙。所以我希望你能尽情地去嗅嗅所有的花朵，把你喜欢的叶子都放进小桶里。

I hope you read your favorite Dr. Seuss books so many times you start inventing your own stories about the Vipper of Vipp.

I hope you ride the carousel with Max untilyou’ve tamed every color horse.

And then I hope you take a lot of naps. I hope you’re a great sleeper.

And I hope even in your dreams you can feel how much we love you.

Childhood is magical. You only get to be a child once, so don’t spend it worrying too much about the future.

童年时光充满魔力。你只有一次童年，别把它都花在担心未来上。

You’ve got us for that, and we’ll do everything we possibly can to make sure the world is a better place for you and all children in your generation.

那些事情，留给爸爸妈妈，我们会竭尽所能地让这个世界变得更好，为了你，也为你们这一代的所有小朋友。

August, we love you so much and we’re so excited to go on this adventure with you. We wish you a life of joy, love and the same hope you give us.

Dear Max,

Your mother and I don't yet have the words to describe the hope you give us for the future. Your new life is full of promise, and we hope you will be happy and healthy so you can explore it fully. You've already given us a reason to reflect on the world we hope you live in.

你妈妈和我现在还无法用言语表达你带给我们对未来的期望。你的人生将充满希望，我们愿你拥有快乐和健康来体会探索这一切。你的出生使我们思考，我们希望你生活在一个怎样的世界。

Like all parents, we want you to grow up in a world better than ours today.

像天下所有父母一样，我们盼望你成长在一个比现在更美好的世界里。

We will do our part to make this happen, not only because we love you, but also because we have a moral responsibility to all children in the next generation.

我们会尽我们所能来实现它。不只因为我们爱你，也因为我们对世界上所有的下一代孩子都有这份道德责任。

Our hopes for your generation focus on two ideas: advancing human potential and promoting equality.

我们对你成长的时代有两个期望：1. 推进人类潜能；2. 促进平等；

Advancing human potential is about pushing the boundaries on how great a human life can be.

推进人类潜能的目的是提高人类生存的质量。

Promoting equality is about making sure everyone has access to these opportunities -- regardless of the nation,families or circumstances they are born into.

促进平等是为了让全世界每一个人，不论国籍、家庭或境况都能得到均等的机会。

If our generation makes the right investments, the answer to each of these questions can be yes -- and hopefully within your lifetime.

如果我们这代人能做出正确的投资，那以上这些问题是可以被解决的，而且有希望在你有生之年被解决。

As you begin the next generation of the ChanZuckerberg family, we also begin the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to join people across the world to advance human potential and promote equality for all children in the next generation.

你是我们陈／扎克伯格家族的第一个孩子，我们也同时启动了陈／扎克伯格计划，加入全球为推动人类下一代生存质量、平等权益的工作中来。

Our initial areas of focus will be personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities.

We will give 99% of our Facebook shares --currently about $45 billion -- during our lives to advance this mission. We know this is a small contribution compared to all the resources and talents of those already working on these issues. But we want to do what we can, working alongside many others.

我们会捐出所持有的99%的Facebook股票，目前市值450亿美金，在我们有生之年执行这个使命。我们深知和很多人付出的工作以及资源相比，我们所做的只是微小的贡献。但是我们希望做我们力所能及的，加入这个行列。

Max, we love you and feel a great responsibility to leave the world a better place for you and all children. We wish you a life filled with the same love, hope and joy you give us. We can't wait to see what you bring to this world.
