An unusual project of architecture took shape in the California desert. The inspiration for this house in a desert zone near Joshua Tree National Park, in San Bernardino County, California, was an unbuilt office project designed years before by the London architecture studio of Jams Whitaker. 

The client is a film producer and see his wife, who owned a 36-acre rocky area of Joshua Tree National Park,  and saw the original design and now saw the chance to use it.
“While there, in the middle of this rocky desert, one of the friends said, ‘You know what would look great here?’, before opening her laptop to show everyone a picture she had spotted on the internet,” said James Whitaker

In the architectural project,  the structure is formed by intersecting various metal shipping containers,  Whitaker was able to take the idea from the paper and start building a container house. This one has gained an unparalleled format, being piled vertically, horizontally, transversely.

To conceive this hourse project, Whitaker imagined a white “exoskeleton”, which is supported by concrete columns. In this way, the look of the containers is seen from the outside, but inside there is an integration between the parts.

This feature allowed the interior to be illuminated since the containers will have part of their surface cut out for windows.  With this, it is possible to contemplate the desert grander and the sky on almost all sides.

The private rooms are distributed in the resulting branches, while the shared spaces are concentrated at the intersection. The volumes are positioned to optimize views and provide different degrees of privacy.
