Economists expect residential construction to boost economic growth this year after the number of new homes approved for construction jumped.

It is set to be a good year for Australia's home builders according to Bureau of Statistics figures which show new building approvals jumped by nearly 7 per cent in January, seasonally adjusted.

The result was much stronger than economists had expected, bouncing back after three months of decline, and puts the annual rate of growth at a strong 34.6 per cent.

Approvals for detached houses led the way in January, rising 8.3 per cent, with other dwellings such as apartments and town houses up 4.6 per cent.

Over the past year, apartments and other multi-unit dwellings rose 46.3 per cent, while detached houses recorded a 26.4 per cent increase.

St George economist Janu Chan says approvals are now at their highest level since records began in 1983 and should start to flow through to actual construction.

"We do expect that to lift throughout this year and for residential construction to provide a strong contribution to growth in 2014," she said.

Other data from the ABS show the current account deficit shrank by 19 per cent to $10.1 billion in the December quarter, roughly in line with forecasts.

Trade figures showed that exports increased while imports declined.

That means net exports will add 0.6 per cent to economic growth in the quarter, which is slightly weaker than expected.

Many economists are now expecting tomorrow's gross domestic product growth to come in somewhere close to 0.7 per cent for the December quarter.

The dollar rose on the strong building approvals figures, and was buying 89.4 US cents around 1:42pm (AEDT).
