ARE AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITIES PUNCHING ABOVE THEIR WEIGHT?

零内幕零水分，5所澳洲大学打榜世界前50！

The QS World Rankings for 2014 came out recently – and the results were pretty good for Australian universities. Australia had 5 universities in the top 50, which is pretty remarkable when you consider that the UK only has 8, and has three times the population. In the broader context, you can see that even bigger and richer countries have very few entrants: France has 2, Japan 2, Germany 1, Russia 0. Even more remarkable is the ranking of best student cities: Melbourne and Sydney are both in the top 5, whilst America only has 2 in the top 20, and the UK only 1.

最近，2014年QS世界大学排名出炉，对澳洲大学来说，可谓形势一片大好：5所大学勇闯世界前50，实在是过于牛X！而腐国有澳洲3倍的人口却只有8所大学入围，顿时高下立显。如果我们放宽比较范围，那些更大更富的国家入围的大学更少：法国？2个。日本？2个。德国？1个。俄罗斯？没有！不过这还不算什么，更牛X的是学生族最宜居城市排行榜。墨尔本和悉尼双双傲立前5，而美国只有2座城市挤入前20，英国只有1座城市获此殊誉。

So what gives Australian universities such high rankings when it comes to comparing universities? Is it the facilities? The affordability to all students wishing to study? Or is it the funding? Perhaps all of the above! There are many factors that come into play when rating the quality of a university. And Australian ones have plenty to offer, which may explain why we do so well.

那么，究竟是什么神秘的力量让澳洲大学变身最大黑马？学校硬件设施？学生族负担得起的生活成本？或者就是太过有钱任性？说不定跟这些都有关系！要综合评价一所大学的质量，确实需要考虑多种因素。不过不巧的是，无论如何比较，澳洲大学样样拿得出手，所以太过强大耀眼实在不是我们的错。

FREE EDUCATION (WELL, PRACTICALLY)

上学不要钱？（真的！确实可以先不交学费的…）

Australians are fortunate enough to have a mostly affordable tertiary education which is heavily subsidised by the government. HECS (Higher Education Contributions Scheme) are loans sponsored by the government in which students can defer payments until they earn a full time income. Effectively, university study fees are deferred until you start earning money. This means that just about any Australian citizen can go to uni and learn: university is accessible to anyone of any background.

澳洲人民确实是命好，政府有钱又不乱花，大力支持教育，所以这里的高等教育绝大多数人基本上都负担得起。HECS（Higher Education Contributions Scheme，高等教育贡献计划）是由政府支持的学生贷款，有了它，妈妈再也不用担心孩子上不起学，大学生们可以推迟缴纳学费，一直到全职工作拿到工资。借助这样的教育贷款系统，学生们可以在有了独立经济来源之后再支付自己的大学学费，确实有效地帮助到了困难的大学生。同时，这也意味着任何一个澳洲公民都可以进入大学学习：英雄不论出身，上大学不计较家庭背景。

FRIENDLY CITIES

澳洲城市的感觉？倍儿友好！

Studying full-time and having little scope to earn money can be really difficult when earning your degree. Thankfully a smaller nation like Australia hosts some of the most affordable cities to live in: Melbourne, Adelaide and Canberra are perfectly sized places for students to enjoy uni life at an affordable price. Combine affordable rent with cheap, convenient transport and moderate population sizes, and you have an ideal place to live and study. Australian cities tend to gravitate towards their centres, with a lively buzz in the CBD; but for those looking for a quieter life amongst the suburbs, or even on the beach, this is just as easy to achieve. Cheap rent, quality food and a short distance to the beach is hard to beat!

Universities in Australia cater well for their intake of students. Down under you can enjoy spacious grounds with multiple rooms for both study and class – not to mention up-to-speed technology with plenty of IT equipment. These privileges can be attributed to generous funding from the government in the recent past: higher education is well supported in Australia and it is a lifestyle opportunity in which we take a lot of pride.

澳洲的大学另一点长处就是总能让自己的学生吃得很满意。学校建筑的地下一层里有许多可以用来上课或自习的房间，这里最不缺的就是地方，更别提最新的科技和最全的IT装备。这些近乎特权的便利主要是来自前不久政府的慷慨解囊：高等教育在澳洲一直享受着大力支持，澳洲人也以此为傲，它为每一个人提供实现小康的机会。

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

课外活动？当然丰富多彩！

Of course, going to university isn’t just about getting a degree. There are hundreds of other things to enjoy whilst you’re working towards your bachelor’s: clubs, sports, societies are among some of the many offers that come about in your career at uni. Australian education in itself provides a vibrant social culture for every student to immerse themselves. So having the chance to work on your soccer skills after uni or showing off your public speaking skills in the weekly moot guarantees quality at every college. In Australia these opportunities spring up across the entire country, and bring forth student culture all to make a better experience for those studying.
