The New Zealand Police is looking for an Assistant to the Police Attaché based at the New Zealand Consulate-General in Guangzhou. The Police Attaché Office (Guangzhou) is brand new, and we are looking for a skilled translator, policing support person, and office administrator to join the young and dynamic New Zealand team. This role reports directly to the Police Attaché in Guangzhou, and has a functional reporting relationship with the New Zealand Police Support Manager based in Beijing. The role has lots of exciting and interesting work inside and outside of the office. Some internal travel to other provinces in China will be required, and the role requires absolute trust and confidence working with the local Public Security organs on sensitive criminal investigations.
We are looking to fill this locally-employed staff (LES) position as soon as possible, with a proposed start date of mid-September 2014. All accommodation, medical, taxation and other costs associated with living in China are the personal responsibility of the successful applicant. The role has a two-year timeframe, reviewable after that period.
In this role you will be responsible for providing the Police Office administrative support, translation support, and assistance with relationship building to help ensure the efficient and smooth running of the New Zealand Police presence in Southern China.
Key tasks will include:
Managing the administrative affairs of the Police Attaché Office, including management of electronic files and paper files.
Organising meetings and online booking systems for hotel and airline travel, financial management of petty cash transactions and local contract management of utilities of the office are required.
Using your language and interpersonal skills in accurate and fast translation from Mandarin and Cantonese to English and back. This will be required in both formal meetings and written reports.
Demonstrated planning and event management skills are an advantage, as is knowledge of Fujian dialect.
Having good stamina and working hours flexibility. The position can require long hours and sometimes difficult scheduling with evening functions and weekend travel. The Police Assistant has to perform multiple roles in a single day, often dealing with unfamiliar and sensitive topics in translation in new environments. There are times of considerable pressure on the role, and applicants must be prepared to remain calm, professional and fully engaged.
The role requires you to be an interpreter in a range of frontline policing environments, some of which may be personally or physically challenging, e.g., interviewing prisoners in jails about sensitive or violent matters, or travelling to remote locations to assist with police cooperation cases in rural provinces.
Applications should include a covering letter, a CV (resume) and a self-assessment against the following selection criteria:
Five or more years’ professional work experience in a professional role.
Hold a relevant tertiary qualification.
Have a good knowledge of and familiarity with the local environment.
Strong understanding of IT systems – both hardware and software especially Microsoft Office products.
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, Mandarin and Cantonese.
Attention to detail and thoroughness in following through tasks.
Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective relationships and work within a team.
Well-developed planning and organisational skills, including ability to prioritise tasks effectively and work under pressure.
Ability to anticipate issues and problems and think of creative solutions.
Knowledge or experience of New Zealand is an advantage.
Fujian dialect skills are of advantage.
All applicants should also provide detailed contact information for at least two referees
Applications should be submitted to the New Zealand Police Beijing Office, New Zealand Embassy Beijing at this email address: [email protected]
Application Period will close on Friday 15 August at 5pm (China time).
Please note that only applicants short-listed for interview will receive a written reply. Thank you for your understanding and your interest in working with the New Zealand Police.
Annual remuneration will be based on the successful applicant’s experience and skills within the range of RMB 200,000 (before tax, plus employer social security payments)
