Twenty-five Canadian universities have been ranked in the top 800 worldwide by Times Higher Education.

The University of Toronto (19), University of British Columbia (34) and McGill University (38) are once again the top three Canadian institutions in the annual World University Ranking.

Also in the top 200 are McMaster University (94), the University of Montreal (113), the University of Alberta (137) and the University of Waterloo (179).

The University of Victoria and University of Ottawa fell out of the top 200 this year.

Overall, U.S. and U.K. institutions continue to dominate, as they have since 2011-12, when the current methodology began. The top five overall are California Institute of Technology, University of Oxford, Stanford University, the University of Cambridge and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Times Higher Education notes that the number of U.S. institutions has declined in recent years relative to the number of schools in other countries and it attributes that to widespread budget cuts.

The rankings, expanded from 400 schools to 800 this year, are based on 13 indicators of teaching and research, including reputation surveys, staff-to-student ratios, research income, citations and more.
