To undertake research in line with the School’s research strategy, to teach primarily at postgraduate level, to undertake research supervision (where appropriate), and to contribute to School management, administration and outreach.
- Deliver teaching and assessment activities including lectures, workshops, seminars, and set and mark coursework, practicals, and field-work, including on the MA in Interpreting, but also on the MA in Translation if appropriate
- Design and deliver high-quality teaching in Chinese language, including on the MA in Interpreting, and contribute to the design or revision of course units
- Select appropriate assessment methods and criteria, assess the work and progress of students by reference to these criteria, and provide constructive feedback to students
- Seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery, and obtaining and analysing feedback
- Supervise postgraduate dissertations in Interpreting
- Supervise practical work where it is part of the course, and advise students appropriately
- Deliver language-specific workshops in Interpreting and, if appropriate, in Translation
- Help to develop appropriate teaching approaches and contribute to curriculum development
- Develop and sustain a personal research plan by managing and undertaking research activities that will enhance the research profile of the subject area and the School
- Develop and/or sustain a high quality publication record by publishing research in refereed journals and presenting at conferences
- Source and secure external funding, either individually or in collaboration with others, from the relevant funding bodies so as to ensure continued growth of the School’s / subject area’s research profile
- Provide guidance to other staff and students on own specialist area
- May work / collaborate on original research with colleagues in other institutions
- Direct, coach and develop research staff, where appropriate
- Provide supervision for doctoral projects
- Develop impact case studies developing from research outputs
- Contribute to the School’s outreach strategy by developing external links
- Provide pastoral care for students within own area to ensure that all issues are dealt with in a timely, sympathetic and effective manner
- Carry out designated School administrative duties, including, for example, committee work, course administration etc. as appropriate to stage of career
- Be responsible for the record-keeping associated with teaching and the preparation of teaching materials
- Plan and manage own teaching and tutorials
- Design / update modules in line with the teaching strategy of the subject area and School
- As module leader, co-ordinate with others (such as support staff or academic colleagues) to ensure student needs and expectations are met
- Plan and prepare research papers to meet publication deadlines
- Prepare research proposals for submission for external funding
- Manage teaching and research resources, laboratories and workshops as required
- Manage, as appropriate, external funding relating to research project
- Act as mentor for students in capacity of personal tutor
- As appropriate assist in the development of skills and competence in others (for example through the supervision of research students)
- Member of the School Board and Examination Board and such committees relevant to administrative duties
- Collaborate with other staff within School
- Participate in and/or develop networks, for example to identify sources of research funding, contribute to student recruitment, to build relationships for future activities
- Contribute to the School’s outreach programme by establishing links with local community groups, industries etc.
- Devise and implement a strategy for internationalisation of the subject area and School in China, with a particular view to developing and sustaining high-quality research collaborations and student recruitment
- Primary degree
- Hold or be about to complete a PhD in Interpreting or Translation (Completion date by time of appointment)
- Evidence of high-quality publications in broad area of Chinese Studies, appropriate to stage of career
- Evidence of ability to undertake high-quality research-funding applications
- Ability to undertake high-quality supervision of MA dissertations and PhD theses in Interpreting and/or Translation
- Evidence of experience of teaching Translation and/or Interpreting at tertiary level
- Ability to think creatively about development of Translation and Interpreting curricula
- Ability to design course materials and to plan and organise the delivery and assessment of taught courses in Interpreting
- Ability to convene courses at PG level
- Ability to contribute fully to the broader administrative activities of Translation and Interpreting and the School of Arts, English and Languages
- Ability and willingness to undertake a coherent and comprehensive programme of internationalisation in China in terms of developing and sustaining high-quality research collaborations and student recruitment
- Native or near-native fluency in English and Mandarin
- Must demonstrate:
