传说中,几乎每个大陆的申请者都会申至少一所加州大学的分校。今天我们就评点一下,今年UC系统的新文书题目。(之前整理的其他文书清单在这里:常青藤大学的文书清单一(必读收藏版);常青藤及顶尖大学文书清单二(必读收藏版))
UC的8道短题目中,要求选择四题做短文章。新的文书可以让学生更多的展现自己,涵盖了领袖力Leadership、创新Innovation、才华Talent、技能Skill、学习Learning、机遇Opportunity、困难Obstacle、挑战Challenge、学校School、社区Community、独特Uniqueness等方面。不过短篇本来对写作要求就更高,所以对更注重成绩的中国学生来说,就是一个比较难啃的骨头。
加州大学新文书详解
以下题目8选4回答,字数限制:350词。选择哪些题目完全在你,但是建议应该选择与你的经历最相关,最能突出你个人表现的问题来回答。
1、描述你的领导力经历,你是如何积极影响他人,帮助解决问题,在团队中有较长时间的贡献。Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others,helped resolve disputes,or contributed to group efforts over time.
需要考虑:领导力这个角色远不只是一个头衔。可以是他人的指导师,可以负责一项特殊任务,或领导组织一次事件或项目。回想你的成就以及你从中学到了什么。你的职责是什么?你领导过团队吗?有没有什么经历彻底改变了你对领导力的理解和看法?你曾经在学校或者在社区和机构的教堂中帮助解决重大问题吗?你的领导力角色不必局限在学校活动中。比如,你帮助或者照顾家里吗?
Things to consider: A leadership role can mean more than just a title. It can mean being a mentor to others, acting as the person in charge of a specific task, or a taking lead role in organizing an event or project. Think about your accomplishments and what you learned from the experience. What were your responsibilities?Did you lead a team? How did your experience change your perspective on leading others? Did you help to resolve an important dispute at your school, church in your community or an organization? And your leadership role doesn’t necessarily have to be limited to school activities. For example, do you help out or take care of your family?
评点:说实话这完全是个随便套的题目啦,不过千万不要把PS和Common系统的东西照搬过来,还是要围绕题目,仔细拆解自己独特的对于领导力这个词的看法。最好是带上强烈的文化和个人色彩,做出你自己版本的领导力诠释。可能是勇于扛责任,可能是牺牲和更多付出,可能是带领大家克服困难挑战自己和未知。
2、每个人都有创新性的一面,可以体现在许多方面:问题解决能力、原创性的创新思维、艺术创意等等。请描述你是如何展示你具有创造性的一面的。 Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you express your creative side.
需要考虑:创造力对你意味着什么?你有什么对你很重要的创新技能吗?你用这个技能做过什么?如果你用创造力解决过问题,你的解决方法是什么?你采用什么步骤解决问题?你的创造力在课内外怎样影响你的决定?你的创造力与你专业和未来事业相关吗?
Things to consider: What does creativity mean to you? Do you have a creative skill that is important to you? What have you been able to do with that skill? If you used creativity to solve a problem, what was your solution? What are the steps you took to solve the problem? How does your creativity influence your decisions inside or outside the classroom? Does your creativity relate to your major or a future career?
评点:还是一样,首先是对于概念的拆解,你自己版本的“创新”是什么。在一个解决问题的过程中,你在哪一个环节跳出了框框,是如何做,做什么,对谁做,在哪里做,或者和谁一起做,你觉得自己足够创新吗?你听过的最动人的创新的故事是什么呢?我建议所有对计算机感兴趣的孩子,都认真研究一下这道题。也建议这些孩子,都读一读原版的 ‘The Innovators’ by Walter Isaacson。
3、你认为你最大的天赋或能力是什么,你是如何逐步开发和表现你的天分的。What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?
需要考虑:如果你有任何令你感到骄傲的天赋或技能,现在就可以跟我们分享了。不必非要是这个天赋曾经被人识别或得到过任何奖项(虽然如果你确实得过,而且你想讲,请给我们分享)。为什么这个天赋或者技能对你很有意义?这个天赋是与生俱来的吗?还是你努力工作学习到的?它在课内外帮你争取到了更多机会吗?如果这样,它们是什么,它们怎样适合你的规划?Things to consider: If there’s a talent or skill that you’re proud of, this is the time to share it. You don’t necessarily have to be recognized or have received awards for your talent (although if you did and you want to talk about, feel free to do so). Why is this talent or skill meaningful to you?Does the talent come naturally or have you worked hard to develop this skill or talent? Does your talent or skill allow you opportunities in or outside the classroom? If so, what are they and how do they fit into your schedule?
评点:如果你在数学、音乐、体育或者是自己报考的专业方面,有可以吹嘘的材料,这是一个不可错过的题目。关于你的专业,你至少可以体现出你对它的了解和热情。比如心理学,那么你可以说说你对人如何有洞察力,如何能轻松解决朋友的纠结和心理问题。比如统计,那么可以说说你平时如何喜欢数字,在实习中如何从一堆数字里发现问题,提出假设得到验证,给实习单位创造了价值。
4、描述你如何利用一个重要的教育机会,或你如何努力克服面临的教育困难。Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.
需要考虑:一个教育机会可以是任何增加你教育体验或者更好让你准备进入大学的机会,比如,在荣誉和学术丰富项目的参与中,或者在一个面向某个岗位或专业的职业学院学习,亦或者参加你感兴趣的高级课程。如果你选择写你曾经遇到过的教育困境,你是怎样克服它或者尝试去克服它们的?你有什么个人特质或者技能帮你克服这个挑战吗?克服这个阻碍是怎样塑造了现在的你?
Things to consider: An educational opportunity can be anything that has added value to your educational experience and better prepared you for college. For example, participation in an honors or academic enrichment program, or enrollment in an academy that’s geared toward an occupation or a major, or taking advanced courses that interest you — just to name a few.If you choose to write about educational barriers you’ve faced, how did you overcome or strived to overcome them? What personal characteristics or skills did you call on to overcome this challenge? How did overcoming this barrier help shape who are you today?
评点:这是一道简历题,只不过是学习方面的简历,让你骄傲的竞赛或者课程成绩,甚至是进入一个竞争激烈的竞赛或者课程,哪怕没有出好的成绩,也可以借着遗憾来展示骄傲,正话反说,你懂的。
5、描述你遇到的最大挑战,以及你为了克服这个挑战所采取的措施。这一挑战对你的学业有怎样的影响? Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
需要考虑:一个挑战可以是个人的,或者是在社区或者学校遇到的事情。为什么这个挑战对你很重要?这是一个让你讲述你遇到过的困难以及从中学到的经验的好机会。你曾接受过其他人的支持或者自己一个人处理它吗?如果你目前正在经历挑战,那你现在在做什么?这个影响了你生活的不同方面吗?比如,问问你自己,“在家里,在学校,你的生活怎样改变?与朋友与家人的关系怎样改变?”
Things to consider: A challenge could be personal,or something you have faced in your community or school. Why was the challenge significant to you? This is a good opportunity to talk about any obstacles you’ve faced and what you’ve learned from the experience. Did you have support from someone else or did you handle it alone?If you’re currently working your way through a challenge, what are you doing now,and does that affect different aspects of your life? For example,ask yourself,“How has my life changed at home,at my school,with my friends, or with my family?”
评点:这道题目不太好写。我们的孩子都是泡在蜜罐里保护在玻璃罩里长大的,哪里有什么真的吃苦受累的经历。如果真的有不一样的经历,比如转学,拿低分,GAP Year,生离死别,哪怕是一次户外的冒险,都可以出彩。不过请务必注意真实性,切莫无病呻吟。美国的孩子生活经历比你丰富得多,光是装是拼不过的。胡吹乱编更是不行,逃得过审文书的招生官的火眼金睛,也逃不过面试官的盘问。
6、描述你最喜欢的学科,说明这个学科如何对你产生影响的。Describe your favorite academic subject and explain how it has influenced you.
需要考虑:讨论你在这个科目上的兴趣发展,描述你在课内外的经历--比如志愿者活动,暑期项目,学生组织或活动的参与--以及你从中获得什么?你在这个科目上的兴趣影响了你选专业或者事业吗?你是否曾追求过这个科目的高等课程(荣誉课,AP课,IB课,或者大学课程)?
Things to consider: Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had inside and outside the classroom—such as volunteer work,summer programs,participation in student organizations and/or activities—and what you have gained from your involvement.Has your interest in the subject influenced you in choosing a major and/or career? Have you been able to pursue coursework at a higher level in this subject (honors,AP,IB,college or university work)?
评点:这道题绝对是为那些有升学顾问的孩子所设置的,因为他们已经有聚焦有方向地准备了两三年!在这题里,你需要将选课和课外活动等项目,与自己的兴趣专业的题目,一一对应。如果你根本没有好好计划过自己的AP,荣誉课程,以及课外活动,属于仓促应战,还是不要回答这道题的好。
7、请描述你做了哪些事情使得你所在的学校或者社区成为一个更好的地方? What have you done to make your school or your community a better place?
需要考虑:把社区当成一个可以包含一群,一个团队或者一个地方的词---例如你所在的高中,家乡,或者家庭。你可以按照你觉得最好的定义一个社区,确保你要讲述你在这个社区的角色。在你社区中有什么你想解决的问题吗?你为什么被鼓励去行动?你从你的付出中学到什么?你的行为怎样令其他人,社区范围或者两者都获益?你是一个人工作还是与其他人一起去主动改变你的社区?
Things to consider: Think of community as a term that can encompass a group,team or a place-like your high school,hometown,or home. You can define community as you see fit,just make sure you talk about your role in that community. Was there a problem that you wanted to fix in your community?Why were you inspired to act? What did you learn from your effort? How did your actions benefit others, the wider community or both? Did you work alone or with others to initiate change in your community?
评点:这是一道公益方面的简历题。不过请注意,花三万块钱在柬埔寨做的公益项目到了这里就不那么合适了。美国人在意的是你如何重视自己身边的社区,能不能以小见大从小事做起。也奉劝各位出国党,莫以善小而不为。
8、如果有一个东西来区分你和其他申请加州大学的申请者有什么不同,这个东西是什么? What is the one thing that you think sets you apart from other candidates applying to the University of California?
需要考虑:不用担心有点夸大。即使你认为你不独特,但是请你记得,世界上只有一个你。从你的角度,你感觉是什么让你会属于加州大学的一个分校?看你生活的时候,一个陌生人要了解什么才能够认识你?你有什么没跟我们分享的事情反而会为你的技能,天赋,挑战增彩,或者一个机会你认为会帮我们了解你更多?我们不一定要寻找你与他人不同的独特点,但是是什么塑造了你。
Things to consider: Don’t be afraid to brag a little. Even if you don’t think you’re unique,you are—remember,there’s only one of you in the world. From your point of view, what do you feel makes you belong on one of UC’s campuses? When looking at your life,what does a stranger need to understand in order to know you?What have you not shared with us that will highlight a skill,talent,challenge, or opportunity that you think will help us know you better? We’re not necessarily looking for what makes you unique compared to others, but what makes you, YOU.
评点:西方人从来就热衷思考这样的问题,我是谁,从哪里来到哪里去。我在这个生命旅程中,独一无二的使命是什么。不过宏观的思考我们并不擅长,往微观里面说,我觉得要突出自己能给校园增加的多样性的价值就好。或许是合唱的爱好,或许是收集邮票,或许是女权思想,或许是对一个中国少数民族的了解,或许是中医,或许是太极,或许是你的乐于助人。
筹备期需要关注的关键动作
光靠分数就能进加大的历史已经一去不复返了。从这次加州大学的文书题目中其实就可以看到,如果想进入加州伯克利、加州洛杉矶这样的梦校,不仅分数要好,课外活动和综合素质也要全面。小伙伴们可以根据自己的兴趣、能力、时间和精力,有选择有目的地规划课外活动:
1、至少从事一项团体活动;
如学生会、运动队、学生社团等,锻炼自己的领导力与合作力。
2、至少精熟掌握一项技能;
如乐器、体育、绘画、主持等。
3、至少选定一门喜欢并钻研的科目;
如物理、数学、艺术类、语言类等,在保证成绩出色的同时参加一些活动,如学习、比赛、科研项目等。
4、至少从事一项公益活动;
如定期参加志愿者活动,关注环境、社会等问题。
上面的四项,你是每个学期都在check, check吗?
做了这些准备,那你的文书已经有了内容。其实,各个学校的文书可能都不同,但万变不离其宗。美国大学要招的,是有思想,有特色的、有目标,有意思的四有新人。
其实,我们在做留学规划的同时,也是在规划人生。在搞好学术成绩、规划好课外活动的同时,要鼓励出国党孩子多开动的脑筋,勇于尝试,拓展自己生命的宽度,活出更加精彩的人生。
