“ When it comes to1 getting people to be more active, much of the attention is focused on2 the improving sports facilities (amenities)1,encouraging people to3 join the gym2or lambasting schools3 for4not doing enough PE.
But could another crucial factor5 be the way neighbourhoods are designed? The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) thinks so.
The organisation has carried (carry) out an analysis of6 the nine major cities in England - Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, London,Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham and Sheffield - to explore this. Its researchers looked at *housing density*4 and the availability of greenspaces5.
‘Healthiercities6'
The least active areas7 - *deprived parts* of (major cities)8 Birmingham, Newcastle and London - had twice the housing density and 20% less green space than the most active places9.This is important.
Nearly 60% of people living in these cities do not do the recommended levels of activity10. But, crucially7, three quarters said they would be happy to walk more and get outside in the fresh air if their local environment was more suitable, according to8 a poll cited by (peaking bodies)9 RIBA.
People cited safer streets11and more attractive green spaces12 as10 two key factors. RIBA has published the findings as it wants councils to take note. Under the shake-up of the NHS last year, local government was given responsibility for11 (可替换为:*the onus is on the local government to ensure*) public health.
So RIBA president Stephen Hodder said he wantedcouncils to ensure12public health becomes an important part of the planning process. "It's vital that13planners and developers take the lead and ensure healthier cities," he added.
To be fair14, this is already happening in many places. Health impact assessments15have become a crucial part of16the process.
But as always - for councils which have seen (see) their funding cut dramatically in recent years17 (arts funding)- it comes down to18 money. One of the examples of good practicecited by RIBA in its report was the re-development of the Brownfield Estate, an inner-London housing estate19. It (undergo) under-went a major £7m buildingprogramme20 with money invested from a variety of public and private sources19.
The project saw (see)20 the walk-ways between flats21become "green grids" lined with grass and trees, while play areas22were created across the site.
Another scheme highlighted was the creation of a natural play area with climbing frames, a water foundation and wetland on adisused field23 (很好的例子) in the former mining town of Huthwaite in north Nottinghamshire. ”
