#American Artist - Alvin Ailey

Dancer and choreographer Alvin Ailey grew up in the American South which imbued in him a powerful sense of black pride. Ailey created his own original genre-bending dance technique, a vibrant fusion of ballet, modern dance, jazz, and Africanist dance, and in 1958 he founded the multiracial Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. The troupe immediately found success and earned him the moniker “Cultural Ambassador to the World” as it toured extensively around the globe. Its first tour was sponsored by the U.S. State Department. To date the dancers of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre have performed for over 20 million people the world over. Ailey helped popularize modern dance and revolutionized the presence of people of color in the dance world.
