Spanish artist-designer Jaime Hayon was born in Madrid in 1974. After studying industrial design in Madrid and Paris he joined Fabrica – the Benetton-funded design and communication academy in Italy- in 1997 where he directed the design department until 2003. Hayon set up his own studio practice in the year 2000 and dedicated himself fully to his personal projects from 2003 onward, today he is one of the most acclaimed creators worldwide.

Green Chicken

The chicken, a rather unexplored shape, found its place amongst my green dreams. I wanted to portray this common bird as a sensational object by amplifying its characteristics and dimensions, turning it into a modern piece, one of great beauty and utility: a rocking chair. The movement, subtle and constant, would give the object a zoom-like trait, a sense of speed and dynamism. My green chicken had taken on a face, a shape, a place and a function.

He has created furniture ranges for iconic danish company Fritz Hansen, Magis, Established and Sons, Bisazza, B.D. Barcelona, Se London, Bernhardt Design, Ceccotti and Moooi. Hayon has designed various lighting fixtures collections for Metalarte and also in collaboration with Swarovski and Baccarat. He has created accessories for Piper Heidsieck, Gaia and Gino and The Rug Company. He designed his first wristwatch collection for a new Swiss watch brand OROLOG which launched in late 2013. These collections have put Jaime at the forefront a new wave of creators that blurred the lines between art, decoration and design and a renaissance in finely-crafted, intricate objects within the context of contemporary design culture.

Sifly Piazza 

Inspired to create a playful, 21st-century version of an outdoor public sculpture, Hayon designed four large-scale, vibrantly colored, kinetic structures for “Merry Go Zoo.” The structures feature a round metal-and-wood base topped by an animal-shaped polyurethane sculpture. Visitors are able to interact with the structures either by spinning on the base or by rotating the sculpture. The installation transforms the piazza into a playground and summer refuge that offers a welcoming atmosphere for socializing and recreation. The installation will also become the stage for performances, art-making activities and special events co-organized with local partner institutions.

Testa Mechanica For Glasstress

This  series of sculptural and two dimensional pieces is a creative departure for both artists Jaime Hayon and Nienke Klunder, taking inspiration from the iconic cultural exports of the USA and the opulence of 17th century European craftwork. Jaime and Nienkes pieces are the icons of the booming, fast-food American dream, a kind of Versailles meets Disneyland hybrid. This unusual juxtaposition transcends historical, social and contextual boundaries through its eclectic influences and overlapping of historical periods and high and low culture. It challenges the elite notions of art and design and gives them a frame of reference in contemporary everyday culture.

The many disciplines invoked: gymnastic for Trapeze Light, ping-pong for Ping Pong Table, collective sports for Sports Lights and Basket Side Table—bring coherence to the collection. Furthermore, Jaime Hayon decided to give the collection a final twist: the use of artisanal and noble materials (his favorites ceramic, wood, marble, hand-blown glass, leather) instead of the obvious high-tech and composite materials preferred today. As always crossing the line. Just imagine a world where things are no longer what they seem to be, limited by what we think they can be; a world where objects can be whatever they want.
