Ericka Beckman

我要扯下你的胸罩

Ericka Beckman was born in 1951 in Hermpstead,New York. She earned a B.F.A. from Washigton University in Saint Louis in 1974, attended the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program in 1975, and earned an M.F.A. from the California Institute of Arts in 1976.

Beckman  works extensively with film and is considered one of the principals of the “Pictures Generation” of artists that came to prominence in the late 1970s. Her work explores the epistemological relationship between one’s perception of self and reality through the use of experimental film techniques, basic prop constructions, non traditional narrative structures, and handmade cinematic special effects.

Over her three-decade career, Ericka Beckman’s playful yet formally demanding films challenge traditional aesthetic, and cultural values, that mix games with fairytales to create hybrids with new rules. Beckman uses play in every sense to shape her message.

“From August 1 through August 31, 1988, a 30-second computer animated message by artist Ericka Beckman will be broadcast from the Spectacolor lightboard at One Times Square. Beckman’s message titled “Advertisement for GITSO TRUST,” will run every twenty minutes, appearing within a loop of commercial advertisements.

Beckman’s message is an advertisement for a fictional Japanese corporation, “GITSO TRUST,” that is “here to help manage America’s future.” The message, which uses images of tractors standing abandoned in a field and a red sun with the GITSO TRUST logo rising over America, reers to the farm crisis in America as well as the increasing control of technology by Japanese industry. It reminds the viewer of America’s domestic difficulties and the growing influence of Japan on our economy.” — The Public Art Fund Inc. press release, July 1988
