The history of marketers seeking the adviceof physicists is a short one, but an understanding of the Theory of Resonancemay give communications experts the edge. Resonance Theory explains the curiousphenomenon of how very small pebbles droppedinto a pond can create bigger waves than a large brick. Thebrick makes a decent splash, but its ripples peter out quickly. A tiny pebbledropped into the same pond, followed by another, then another, then another, all timed carefully, will create ripples that build into small waves.
As Dr Carlo Contaldi, a physicist atImperial College London, explains, a small amount of energy committed at justthe right intervals – the ‘natural frequency’– creates a cumulatively large effect.
Media consultant Paul Bay believes that justas with pebbles in a pond, a carefully choreographed and meticulously timedstream of communication will have a more lasting effect than a sporadic bigsplash during prime-time TV breaks.
Innocent is a testament to the power of pebbles. Until lastyear, the maker of smoothies had never advertised on TV, instead drip-feedingthe market with endless ingenious marketing ploys – from annotating its drinks labels with quirky messages tohosting its own music festival, Fruit stock. The company sent a constant streamof messages rather than communicating through the occasional big and expensivenoise.
So, whether you’re trying to makewaves in the laboratory or in the media, the people in white coats would advisea little and often. A big budget is not the prerequisite for success.
解析:
第一段:第一句话如果大家看着比较懵,紧接着想下读,那么我们从“but an understanding of the Theory of Resonance may givecommunications experts the edge. Resonance Theory explains...”
第三段: 有用的东西出现了,“Media consultantPaul Bay believes that just as with pebbles in a pond”,这个媒体人相信,就像池塘里的石子那样,如果能在做媒体广告的时候运用相同的strategy,一个well-timing的广告所带来的效益会更深远。
“Compare your summary to the original text, the best response will clearly summarize the main idea and condense the essential support ideas”大家看懂了么? 所以如果你没有压根没有提这个例子,会扣分,但是如果把这个essential supporting idea花大篇幅去写同样也会扣分,正确的写法应该是在你的summary中以“such as, including 或者 it can be shown in”一笔带过。再多提一点,这里官方说是essential supporting ideas,所以对于那些supporting idea里的 supporting idea,比如这题当中的“annotating its drinkslabels with quirky messages to hosting its own music festival, Fruit stock”就没有必要提及了,因为这是支撑句中的例子。
“Resonance theory, which illustrates small pebbles with rightintervals create larger waves than a large brick, which can be used inadvertisement strategy, meaning that constant stream of information willattract more attention than one big budget and this can be shown in success ofa smoothie company.”
