When we discuss air pollution, we are generally referring to harmful substances introduced into the air that are regulated under the Clean Air Act which requires the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to set National Ambient Air Quality Standards for six “criteria air pollutants”:

1. Particulate matter, or PM;

2. Ground-level ozone

3. Sulfur Dioxide

4. Nitrogen Dioxide

5. Lead

6. Carbon Monoxide
