  • New undergraduate students/SEFP and Pre-Masters students: If you are a first-year undergraduate or SEFP student or Pre-Masters student, return your application no later than 31 May of the year of entry. You may submit an application after this date, but it is highly unlikely you will be made an offer, due to the popularity of Queen Mary Halls.

  • New postgraduate students: If you are a first-year postgraduate student, return your application no later than 31 May of the year of entry. You may submit an application after this date, but it is highly unlikely you will be made an offer, due to the popularity of Queen Mary Halls.

  • Study Abroad/Exchange/International Foundation Programme in Social Sciences and Humanities and the International SEFP: The accommodation application deadline is 31 July for first semester or full year students and 31 October for second semester applicants.

  • Erasmus exchange students: Unfortunately, Erasmus exchange students are not eligible for College housing. On request, help can be given in finding alternative accommodation.

The online housing application process opens in March each year. Housing criteria

Because Queen Mary residences are so popular, there are some restrictions on who is eligible for a place but if you can answer 'Yes' to the following three questions you are likely to be offered a place, subject to availability.

Question one: Will you be a new first year full-time registered student at Queen Mary, University of London, who has not lived in a Queen Mary residence before (i.e. on another course of study) and who has applied by the deadline (see section above)?

Question two: Is your home too far from Queen Mary, University of London to commute daily? Please note priority will be given to those students living furthest from Queen Mary, University of London and Care Leavers who will be accommodated.

Question three: Are you prepared to sign an agreement for a full academic year in the Residences, at least for the period September to June? (This condition does not apply to single semester Associate students or mid-year applicants).

If you can answer 'yes' to questions one and three, but live close enough to Queen Mary, University of London to commute you can still make an application which will be considered later during the academic year, should vacancies arise.

Important Notes for first-year undergraduates

  • No priority is given to any applicant applying after the deadline of 31 May or to insurance or clearing applicants. Your application will be held on a waiting list pending cancellations which may occur after A-level results or later during the academic year.

  • If you are holding a conditional offer at Queen Mary, University of London please do not wait until you receive your examination results before completing and submitting your housing application.

Extenuating circumstances

If you have extenuating circumstances that you wish to be considered when submitting your application please submit any supporting literature, which is relevant to your case within 14 days of making your application.

In the case of a medical condition you will need to provide medical evidence signed and dated within three months of the date of your application. This evidence has to be written in English and provided by a doctor or other medical professional, such as a specialist. The evidence must be submitted within seven days of making your application. Unless you are a first year international student applying to study at Queen Mary this evidence must come from a medical practitioner based in the UK. All applications with the necessary supporting literature will then be passed to the Disability and Dyslexia Service (Student Services) for an assessment. For further information go to Disability and Dyslexia Service

Any non-medical extenuating circumstances will be referred to the Estates and Facilities Review Panel for consideration. You will be required to send an email outlining your extenuating circumstances to [email protected] and any supporting literature should be scanned and sent with this email. Your request will be acknowledged and you will be informed of the Panel outcome by email.

Step two: Allocations

At the present time the University does not ‘guarantee’ any accommodation to any group of students.

Room allocations for successful applicants are made during the period July to September.

  • If you are successful in obtaining a place in halls, you will be sent an email giving you instructions on how to view and accept this offer via the online accommodation system. You are advised to check the email address you gave us on a regular basis to see if you have been made an offer of housing, missed deadlines may result in you losing your room allocation. It is advisable to store our email [email protected] in your contacts list to prevent these emails being treated as spam.

  • If you are unsuccessful in obtaining a place in halls, you will be given further information on how the waiting list for halls operates, or if required, help finding alternative accommodation.

Mature students will, subject to availability, be allocated into flats with other mature students. We define a mature student as being age 22 or over at time of application.

Requests for single sex accommodation is only available in halls where the bathroom facilities are shared

Pre-sessional English students

Application Procedure

After you accept your place to study Pre-Sessional English at Queen Mary, University of London, the Admissions Office will supply you with a username and password and a link to submit an online housing application. Full details on accommodation types and costs can be found atwww.residences.qmul.ac.uk/college

When applying for accommodation for the duration of your Pre-sessional English course you must select the housing application for the ‘2014/15 academic year’ and not the 2015/16 option. Although the Pre-Sessional course is for a duration of either 5, 9 or 13 weeks you should still select the “Let Length” option FULL YEAR. We will know to only offer the accommodation for the required Pre-sessional duration.

Once you have submitted your 14-15 online housing application, you will:

  1. Receive confirmation from Housing Services in the form of an email

  2. Receive an offer of housing also by email, requiring you to accept the offer and pay a deposit. Offers of Pre-Sessional housing are sent out from May onwards.

  3. On completion of your housing acceptance, you will receive arrival instructions and information on how to purchase bed-linen and kitchen equipment.

If you have also applied for a place to study on one of our Degree programmes for the 2015/16 year, and would like to stay in University accommodation during that programme, you will need to make a second housing application using the application for the ‘2015/16 academic year’. Further details on how to apply for accommodation for your degree programme will be sent once you have accepted your offer for that programme. Applications for 2015-16 academic year open in March 2015.

You will therefore have two active online housing applications;

  • One for the Pre-Sessional course of study for 14-15

  • One for the Term-Time main course of study for 15-16

Please ensure you read all communication from Housing Services carefully, as we will be communicating with you by email, regarding both applications during the summer.

If your Term-Time housing application is successful you receive an email confirmation of this. The accommodation may not be in the same residence as your Pre-Sessional housing. You will be required to transfer accommodation at the end of your Pre-Sessional course.

Arrival Dates

Course A: Wednesday 17 June 2015
Course B: Wednesday 15 July 2015
Course C: Wednesday 12 August 2015

You can make a request to arrive earlier than these dates, perhaps to visit friends or do some sight-seeing, by emailing Housing Services with your specific date requirements to [email protected]
