Choose Your University, Part 3
In the first part of our series, “Choose Your University”, I introduced the idea of characterizing schools as “reach, target, and safety” schools. Last week, I discussed important considerations when choosing your university, including the program specific ranking of the area of desired study, differences between small liberal arts colleges and large universities, and the importance of finding an environment that best fits your personality and goals. In this blog, I will be talking about financial considerations you should bear in mind while you narrow your list of universities to which you’d like to apply. This blog is directed towards undergraduates. The last blog of the series will be posted this weekend on financial considerations for graduate school applicants.
An undergraduate education from a reputable American university carries international recognition, equips you well to manage in a globalized, English-speaking world, and is likely to open many doors for you down the road. While the benefits of studying in the US are many, an American education can be expensive.
The range of tuition and fees for undergraduate studies varies tremendously by university. At public universities, international students often face higher tuition fees than Americans, the rationale being that Americans pay taxes that subsidize these universities. At private universities, the opportunities for scholarships may be fewer for international students than American-born applicants. Nonetheless, there are strategies for international students to save money while not sacrificing the quality of education.
The first strategy is to look at universities which offer scholarships or grants to disadvantaged students.
“Need-blind admissions” is a term referring to an admission policy that does not consider financial need in the admission process. If you are admitted to a university with need-blind admissions and your parents earn under a set amount of income, you are automatically eligible for reduced or free tuition. There are currently six universities in the United States that offer need-blind admissions to international students: Dartmouth College, Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Amherst College, Yale, and Princeton.
While “top 20” private universities are often regarded as the most prestigious, a very high-quality education can be obtained at lower ranked public universities—and for a much cheaper price. For example, spending four years at Columbia University may cost you well over $200,000 for tuition, fees, and housing, while a bachelor’s degree from Georgia Tech (a solid, top 50 university) would cost less than half of that.
Something very important to keep in mind is that the reputation of the university you choose is only a small part of your occupational opportunities after your studies. Employers (and graduate schools) place high importance on the opportunities you sought during your time as an undergraduate, including internships, research, and extracurricular leadership activities in which you participated. Your college GPA is also tremendously important. An outstanding student from Georgia Tech with a 4.0 GPA and impressive internships, for example, has a much better shot at landing a top job compared to a mediocre student with no internship experience from Columbia.
So, in summary, do your research about the cost of the tuitions to which you apply. Keep in mind that while some schools may be out of your budget, there are other more affordable universities at which you can still receive a top education. Go America’s American and Chinese Consultants have deep knowledge of scholarship opportunities for international students. For more information on these opportunities, don’t hesitate to contact us.
