按照中国的农历，八月为秋季的第二个月，古时称为仲秋，因此民间称为中秋，又称秋夕、八月节、八月半、月夕、月节，又因为这一天月亮满圆，象征团圆，又称为团圆节。受中华文化的影响，中秋节也是日本、越南、朝鲜半岛等地的传统节日。

中秋之夜，月色皎洁，古人把圆月视为团圆的象征，因此，又称八月十五为“团圆节”。古往今来，人们常用“月圆”、“月缺”来形容“悲欢离合”，客居他乡的游子，更是以月来寄托深情。唐代诗人李白的“举头望明月，低头思故乡”，杜甫的“露从今夜白，月是故乡明”，宋代王安石的“春风又绿江南岸，明月何时照我还”等诗句，都是千古绝唱。

The Mid-Autumn Festival (Traditional Chinese: 中秋節, Simplified Chinese: 中秋节, Vietnamese: tết Trung Thu) is a harvest festival celebrated by ethnic Chinese, Koreans and Vietnamese people. The festival is held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar with full moon at night. That is between early September to early October of the Gregorian calendar with full moon at night.

Mainland China listed the festival as an "intangible cultural heritage" in 2006 and a public holiday in 2008. It is also a public holiday in Taiwan, and in Hong Kong. Chuseok originally known as hangawi is a major harvest festival and a three-day holiday in Korea. In the Vietnamese culture, it is considered the second-most important holiday tradition after Tết.
