There will probably be more people working at home and more children studying at home, as computers are cheaper and more accessible. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Technological advancements have created great changes in modern lifestyle. With more affordable and accessible computers, more people will probably work from home and more children will be home schooled which I believe is a negative development as this will have serious repercussions on our personal skills and personality.

Firstly, with the increasing trend of working from home and home schooling, people will develop a lack of interpersonal skills. Children will not meet other kids at school and adults would not work alongside colleagues if they spend time on the computer at home for study and work, which would disallow them to work on essential soft skills. For example, an Australian Health research found that 93% of the kids who are home-schooled via the computer lack opportunities to communicate with others and work in teams, giving them poorer communication, presentation and group-work skills than students who attend school.

Furthermore, this trend would lead to people developing antisocial behavior and create a distant community. As more children and adults will spend time at home, they will end up avoiding contact with other people in the society making the feel cut off from others. This may in turn, make individuals feel less confident around others and less outgoing, making people avoid conversing and socializing with others. For instance, when adults spend too much time on computers for work, they avoid talking face-to-face with their peers and colleagues, giving them very few opportunities to mingle with one another and thus, building a more aloof personality for them.

In conclusion, more economical and easy-to-access computers will possibly increase the number of people working at home and of children studying at home, which is a negative development in my opinion, since it would result in scarcity of interactive skills and a detached society.
