Economics of air pollution

Costs:

• Global economies are negatively affected by air pollution due to costs associated with increased healthcare and a reduction in productivity.    

• In 2013, the World Bank estimated premature deaths due to air pollution cost the global economy about $5.11 trillion in welfare losses.

Opportunities:

• Exports of U.S. air pollution technology will create jobs in an expanding industry.  U.S. industry revenues for air pollution control in 2014 totaled $19.6 billion, including equipment, instruments, and services. 

• The International Trade Administration has shown increasing demand for environmental technologies in the global market (including air pollution control) since 2000.
