Some people point that experiential learning (i.e. learning by doing it) can work well in formal education. However, others think a traditional form of teaching is the best. Do you think experiential learning can work well in high schools or colleges?
Avoid remembering knowledge by rote 避免死记硬背 | Not suitable for test-oriented education 不适合应试教育 |
Synthesize learning (apply knowledge to practices)
Harvest practical skills 获得实用技能 | The learning outcome is unpredictable 学习效果不能预测 |
Problem solving by doing is very often much more fun than being lectured to. | It is foolish to learn something through trial and error that you could learn from someone else's experience in a book instead. |
Traditional methods do not resonate with learners on a deep understanding level. | Introverts often feel pushed aside during a group discussion process. |
Training should be designed to support lasting behavior change. | In goal-oriented culture, experiential learning is untargeted and a waste of time. |
Hands-on learning |
Teaching approach |
Traditional training |
Reliable, dependable |
Role-play scenarios |
Mimic workplace situations |
Teachers’ guidance/instruction |
Tertiary education |
Formal education settings |
Active participation |
Solve real-life issues |
Engagement with peer students |
Generate the best results |
A classroom environment |
It is widely accepted that different learning strategies result in different learning outcomes. Some people point that experiential learning works well in a formal education system, whereas opponents argue that a traditional form of teaching is the best approach in classrooms. Personally speaking, I contend that the approach of experiential learning can be applied to high schools or colleges when used wisely, which can be supported by the reasons as follows.
To begin with, experiential learning helps students to harvest practical skills. This is rather obvious because students have to practice many times to finish a certain task. In formal learning settings, especially in colleges, students are expected to be able to apply theoretical knowledge to real-life situations. For example, university professors often require my friend who major in education to come up with curriculum designs that one day can be used in real-world teaching.
On the other hand, the second reason for my argument is that the experiences of real events impress us the most, which avoids remembering knowledge by rote. A recent study from Beijing University reports that almost all classes forces students to memorise knowledge by rote. From the perspective of educators, this is not a desirable result of formal education. However, experiential learning can be a complement of traditional learning and a combination of both teaching approaches maximise the learning outcome of students.
With all points above, the conclusion is that experiential learning can work well in high schools or colleges because it helps students to harvest practical skills and avoid remembering by rote. In this regard, it is imperative for governments to encourage more experiential learning at schools or colleges.
