2020 vision for UAL at Olympicopolis and Elephant & Castle

UAL aims to build a new creative hub in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park by moving London College of Fashion, made up of over 5,000 students and 500 members of staff, to Stratford Waterfront, dubbed Olympicopolis. The university is also exploring a major development for London College of Communication in the Elephant and Castle area. Both projects should be complete by 2020, subject to funding and planning.

Nigel Carrington, UAL’s Vice-Chancellor, said:

“The Stratford site would be a flagship for UAL and a creative hub for London, just as Central Saint Martins has proved at Kings Cross. It means that the college – spread across six sites in five boroughs – will have a single campus for the first time in its 100 year history.

“We are also committed in principle to a flagship development in the Elephant and Castle area for London College of Communication. This would keep it close to its roots in a borough which — like Stratford – is enjoying huge investment. We hope to announce the location by the end of the year.

“These moves are part of UAL’s five year plan to make all of our buildings worthy of a world-class university.”

Confirmed neighbours in Stratford Waterfront include the V&A, Sadler’s Wells and University College London. Nigel Carrington is a member of the Judging Panel which will select the architectural design competition for the development.

London Legacy Development Corporation – which is responsible for Stratford Waterfront – expects to be able to confirm funding for the development in December 2014.

“This would be a wonderful opportunity as UAL brings the College’s activities together for the first time onto one site. It would enable London College of Fashion staff and students to fully exploit their creative potential as they collaborate not just across the College but with those organizations that will become our neighbours.”

If funding is confirmed, UAL will develop the brief for its Olympicopolis buildings with College staff and students, with the design team appointed in early 2015. Planning permission would be sought in 2017 and the new site would be ready for occupation in 2020.

“London College of Communication has played a significant role at Elephant and Castle for over 50 years. I will be delighted to continue to build our future here.”

The schedule of any development in Elephant and Castle will be confirmed later in 2014.
