Art exhibition showcases students talent
Amazing artwork by more than 40 A-Level students from Barrow Sixth Form College will be on show at a public exhibition next week.
The pieces are in a range of media including pastels, acrylic, watercolour, animation ink and even coffee and were created by students going off to do art degrees at top universities around the country.
Head of Art and Design Nikki Conigliaro said the students had set the standard very high. “There are some stunning pieces of art and great photographs and we are delighted to host an exhibition to show off our talented students’ work to the public. Many received unconditional offers from universities based on the strength of their art portfolios.”
The exhibition will be held from 4pm to 6pm on Thursday June 11 at the College on Rating Lane and all are welcome.
It follows the success of the College’s BTEC Foundation Art course, which is a one-year post A-Level course for students wanting art and design careers and is now in its 20th year. Half of the eight students successfully secured distinctions for their work and seven are heading to universities to study art-based courses.
The foundation project work included mixed media paintings, futuristic garments, double exposure photos, animation and 3D computer modelling.
Graphic designer Calum Pether, a former Dowdales student who has secured a place to study a BA Hons degree in Information and Interface Design at the highly-rated London College of Communication, was one of those receiving a distinction.
He created music festival merchandise with a ‘chilled out vibe’ for his final project and said students had been putting orders in after seeing the display.
“There were a lot of different possibilities with my project for the ‘Wailaki Valley’ festival because I could create adverts, posters, hoodies and T-shirts. I wanted to have some tangible merchandise and I’ve had people coming up to me asking to buy it.”
Other distinctions were secured by David Cottington (Fashion); Annee Narongchai (Illustration) and Aaron Backhouse (Product Design).
