四中国际校区资深骨干教师Scott Searer
Good morning everybody; my name is Scott. I have been teaching in Beijing for ten years now, and have just finished my second year at Beijing #4 High School International Campus. After hearing what Dr. Prettyman and Miss Isler had to say, I would like to mention just a few things.
大家早上好,我的名字是陆子羽。直至今日,我已经在北京教书十多年了,在北京四中国际校区教书两年了。在您听了Prettyman教授和Isler女士的介绍之后,我想再进一步补充介绍一些有关美国教育及美国新高考改革的一些新政策。
Firstly, we have chosen materials that are informative and interesting.Combined with such experienced teachers as Steve and Renee, they are certain to provide a good foundation for your child’s success on the SAT and in their studies abroad.
首先,我们国际校区已经为学生们选取了信息度更强以及更加有新意有趣的教科书。不仅如此,我们还有很多教学经验丰富的教师,例如Steve老师,Renee老师。他们可以保证您的孩子可以对英语学习打下一个深厚的基础,不仅可以在SAT的考试中取得优异的成绩,而且在美国留学取得成功。
My main message has to do with something that is essential to this success: fluency. The most fundamental of course is listening; listening is crucial not just for attending class and obtaining knowledge, it is vital for speaking: in order to be a good speaker of a second language you must first be a good listener.
流利的学习英语与许多能力相结合,不仅仅是我们经常所说的:要流利的用英语对话。事实上,在学习英语中,最重要的能力是听力!听力不仅仅是为了在课堂上听讲,获取知识。听力更是说英语的关键。为了流利的说一门第二外语,孩子首先要学会的是成为一个好的“倾听者”!
We will identify students who have difficulty speaking; to these students we will give recordings of passages from the course materials. For troubled speakers, intensive, repeated listening (using headphones) along with the text is the first step.Actual speaking fluency will be worked on in class.
因此,我们会挑出那些对于说英语有困难的学生,针对这些学生,我们将会给他们提供相应的课程教材,教材中会有一些课文的录音,让学生们以听为主,对照着课文听录音。对于说英语有问题的学生,这些孩子首先需要做的就是,戴着耳机对着课文原文,进行重复性质的听力强化训练。事实上,流利地说英语在课堂上,在老师的带领下会最有效。
The third, and likely the most important, is reading fluency. Reading fluency is vital for success in handling college reading assignments; I can still distinctly recall my first week of reading at the University of Washington 30 years ago: it totaled more than 750 pages and required 2 essays written by Friday.
第三点,也是最重要的一点,就是流利的阅读。流利的阅读是在美国大学课堂里能顺利完成教授布置的作业成功的关键。至今仍旧能够让我记忆犹新的是,30年前我在华盛顿大学念书第一个礼拜的阅读作业:在一周以内需要读完一本750页的书籍,并在周五上交两篇读书报告。
The goal for those who need to be able to handle such a heavy reading load is 250 words per minute (we will test your child’s reading speed and comprehension).
对于美国课堂来说,阅读量非常大。想要完全掌握如此大的阅读量,我们要求的阅读速度大约是每分钟250个单词。另外,我们会检测学生的阅读速度以及对文章的理解。
Reading fluency is very important for a number of reasons; our course will instill in your child a number of good habits helpful for second-language learners.
基于以上原因,流利的阅读是非常重要的。因此,我们的课程将会引导您的孩子,培养良好的,美国式的学习第二门语言的习惯。
Reading in class will be what is called intensive reading: that is to say that we will be teaching specifically towards the student’s gaining of new vocabulary and idioms, as well as their mastering more challenging sentences that feature more complex grammatical structures.
在我们的课堂上,我们将提供阅读强化训练—也叫精读训练。也就是说,我们将具体地给学生们讲授如果学习生单词,固定搭配(习惯用语),以及如何读懂理解长难句,含有很多语法点的复杂句的方法。
Extensive reading should be broad in its scope and include as many of the student’s interest areas as possible. In extensive reading a student should read materials in which they recognize more than 90% of the vocabulary. It is extensive reading that is largely responsible for increasing a student’s fluency.
另一个阅读方式是“泛读”,“泛读”的内容比较宽泛,以培养学生的兴趣性阅读为主。在泛读中,学生应该可以识别阅读材料中百分中90%的单词,以便理解。多进行泛读训练,可以更好的提高学生的流利的阅读能力。
One further aspect of the importance of reading is its relationship to developing writing fluency.
从长远的角度来看,提高阅读能力可以很好的提高写作流利的能力。
In a fashion similar to the impact that listening has on speaking, reading is the foundation for becoming a good writer. Writing is vital for admission to as well as success in college, and it is often the most significant challenge that foreign students face.
从主流的英语教学理论上来看,听力对于口语有很大的影响;阅读是写作的基础,一个好的作家一般都擅长阅读。能否被美国大学录取,以及能否成功融入美国大学的学习,写作都是关键。通常来说,对于来美国的留学生来说,写作都是最大的挑战。
I would also add that all advanced degrees require the writing of a lengthy thesis.
另外,我还想补充一点。对于所有的美国高等学位来说,例如硕士,博士等学位。都要求学生写很多有长度又有深度的论文。
There is one remaining aspect of fluency that will be addressed by our course: cultural literacy or what could be called cultural fluency. Knowledge from the class readings and the History course in particular will provide essential cultural background that makes the SAT and college coursework such a challenge for foreign students.
最后,对于英语学习的流利性,我们的课程中还包含了非常重要的一点—跨文化文学学习,或者我们称之为跨文化的流利性。阅读课的内容以及历史课所学的知识,将给学生们提供必要的跨文化背景。因为这些跨文化的背景知识将会给你们孩子在SAT的考试中,以及未来在美国学习中带来巨大的挑战。
