日程 Schedule (subject to change)
9:00-9:15: Opening Remarks
9:15-10:30: Lesson Planning to Set Up Students to Succeed – Heidi Healy
The success of students begins long before an actual lesson begins. It begins when teachers plan and prepare what they are going to teach and how they are going to teach. This workshop will introduce the ROPES model of lesson planning along with 5 key questions to help teachers better plan and prepare so that their students can have greater success. Teachers will learn about setting objectives, planning (and presenting) lessons in a meaningful sequence, providing students with context for learning, supporting students during meaningful practice and informal assessment practices.
10:45-12:00: Energizing Review Days with a Student-Centered Grid Game – Paula Adams
Exam reviews are important to ensure students have grasped the knowledge and understanding they need to do well. It’s important that students, and not the teachers, are the ones revising the material. In this workshop, the presenter shows how a simple 6x6 grid and dice can be used to create custom review games that students must work in groups to complete. With careful planning and design, teachers can design a review that covers key points in grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension, while maximizing student talk time. Participants will work in groups to develop game boards, and have a chance to try out the process.
12:00-13:30 Lunch Break
13:30-14:45: How to Be a Successful Life-long Learner – Heidi Healy
In order for students (and teachers) to be successful, they must become aware of themselves as learners. They must understand various factors that affect learning such as motivation, environment, methods and self-evaluation. In addition, they need to understand how to use these factors to increase their success. This workshop teachers will introduce the principles of self-regulated learning and how these principles can help students learn better inside and outside the classroom. In addition, the presenter will discuss how these principles can be applied to help teachers improve their own learning of English and teaching methods.
15:00-16:15 Activating Students’ Positive Expectations through Reflective Writing – Paula Adams
Reflection and self-awareness are skills that allow students to learn and grow into confident speakers and writers of English. However, many students are quick to recognize their problem areas, tending toward self-criticism rather than building on successes to establish motivating goals. In this workshop the presentation focuses on incorporating variety of short reflective writing activities throughout the term, such as letters to oneself, daily micro-journals, and “future” autobiographies, to teach students to set positive expectations for their language learning and their future success, independent of how they view their comparative standing in class.
16:15-16:30 Closing Remarks
