Thursday, November 29, 18:30 Reflections on the Progress and Challenges of the Global HIV/AIDS Response
To mark the 30th Anniversary of World AIDS Day and 15 years of the United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the Shanghai American Center welcomes Foreign Service Officer Sean R. Brennan for a conversation about the history of the global HIV/AIDS response. From its inception in 2003, PEPFAR received strong bipartisan and public support. PEPFAR promotes the long-term sustainability of the global HIV/AIDS response, with the goal to usher in an era in which HIV can be controlled with medication. Today, while many people living with HIV are able to enjoy long and fulfilling lives, some are not as fortunate. The World Health Organization estimates that nearly 1 million people died of HIV-related illnesses in 2017. How the world responds to one of the greatest health crises of the past century challenges our technological prowess, social innovation, and leadership.
This year’s World AIDS Day theme is “Know your status”. Significant progress has been made in the AIDS response since 1988, and today three in four people living with HIV know their status. However, UNAIDS reminds us that we still have miles to go and that includes reaching people living with HIV who do not know their status and ensuring that they are linked to quality care and prevention services.
Sean Brennan
Sean Brennan holds a Masters in Public Health from the University of California at Berkeley. He has worked on policy issues as well as implementation of HIV/AIDS testing, treatment and support for the United Nations, NGOs, and for the Government of Western Australia.
