In recent years, media reports have been primarily emphasizing problems and emergencies rather than positive developments, which some people believe is harmful to both individuals and society. I somewhat disagree with this view as I believe that this trend has resulted in widespread security and inspiration for development and support.
Media’s focus on reporting problems and emergencies plays a vital role in keeping the society and its components, including individuals, in check. In other words, several individuals such as political figures, celebrities and industry professionals perform their duties to their best abilities because they fear that their mistakes would always be reported to the public via the media. Moreover, the media’s reports on emergencies helps in motivating the people to do better and aid one another on a large scale. For example, during the financial crisis of 2009, the news reports on the poor banking systems and economic policies that was brought to the public’s notice for a long time, encouraged nations to build financial security and promoted international cooperation.
However, it is true that focusing on the negative issues rather than the positive development might harm the public to a small extent. With constant news of problems, individuals may develop a negative outlook which can result in threats and hostility within the society in turn. For instance, constant news of the economic gap between the rich and the poor in India resulted in a great conflict between the two sectors in 2015, wherein several poor people attacked the homes of rich people because they blamed the wealthy individuals for being unhelpful which was a view built by the media.
In conclusion, I slightly disagree with the opinion that media’s attention on issues and emergencies rather than positive development is injurious to the society and individuals as this focus results in societal security and collaboration as well as development.
