After a 40-year career with Radio-Canada, Quebec journalist Jean-François Lépine has been named Quebec’s representative in China.

Après une carrière de plus de 40 ans avec Radio-Canada, le journaliste québécois Jean-François Lépine à été nommé représentant officiel du Québec en Chine.

He will head three offices in China based in Beijing, Shanghai (where he will be based) and a new office being set up in Shandong Province, an eastern region of about 100 million people.

Il dirigera trois bureaux en Chine - soit à Beijing, Shanghai (là où il sera basé) et un nouveau bureau qui s'établie actuellement dans le Shandong - une région qui compte plus de 100 millions d'habitants.

International Affairs Minister Christine St-Pierre made the announcement Tuesday, calling on the former journalist to foster closer ties with the Chinese government and better trade relations between China and Quebec businesses.

C'est la Ministre des Relations Internationales et de la Francophonie, Christine St-Pierre, qui a annoncé la nomination de M. Lépine. Elle l'a appelé à fortifier les liens entre la Chine et le Québec afin d'améliorer les relations d'échanges entre les entreprises choinoises et québécoises.

Over the course of his Radio-Canada career, he worked mainly as a foreign correspondent and has been based in Jerusalem, Paris and Beijing. He has also hosted several programs for the public broadcaster.

Au cours de sa carrière à Radio-Canada, M. Lépine a notamment occupé le poste de correspondant à Beijing, à Paris et à Jérusalem. Il a également été animateur de plusieurs programmes chez le radio-diffuseur.

In the two years since he left Radio-Canada, he has worked as a consultant, working with Quebec businesses interested in deepening their international reach.

Depuis avoir quitté Radio-Canada il y a deux ans, il a travaillé comme consultant pour les entreprises Québécoises qui désirent développer leurs stratégies internationales.

“Quebecers can’t not be there,” Lépine said about the Chinese market, which he described, despite the current economic crisis, “the biggest market in the world.

Despite this appointment, Quebec will not increase the budget of its Chinese offices, which sit at $1.3-million annually. Including Lépine, Quebec’s Chinese delegation totals 17 people.
