Ode to Nature

It seems somewhat forgotten today that the earliest art forms - now thought to be 40,000 years old, after recent discoveries in caves on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia - and on through the millennia, most if not all were derived from nature. Of course, through man-made manufacture - religion, war, industrialization, globalization, banality, etc. - the subject matter of art had to widen, broaden, and explode, in accordance. However this evolution seems to have mutated to such an extent with contemporary art and artists of the early C.21st, that nature in art has almost completely disappeared - a terribly sad reflection of the planets current vulnerability.

Thankfully, there are still a few artists around the world today who have the ability through their art, to bring us back to, to remind us, of the essence of life, the natural world - it's beauty, it's richness, it's fragility. Zhao Yuepeng from Zhejiang in China is one such artist. His drawings, water-colours and oil paintings, as delicate as the flora and fauna he observes and records, have an ethereal, ephemeral beauty and elegance. A dragonfly in flight, it's irridescent wing caught in sunlight. A fallen lychee, rippling the surface of a mirrored pond. Peach blossoms fluttering amidst the whirl of a humming bird. These mayfly moments, fleeting yet profound, deserve to reacquire our attention. These are Zhao's Odes to Nature - Odes to us all.
