1. Spring Festival travel rush 春运
The Spring Festival travel rush season is a special period for the Chinese, when the Chinese transport system faces greatest pressure from high traffic loads, due to tens of millions people hurrying home, according to tradition, to spend the Spring Festival with their families. During this time of year, it’s very hard to book and purchase tickets, especially train tickets.
2. Spring Festival goods 年货
Spring Festival Goods is a general name for all goods needed for the festival, including food and clothes. In the early twelfth lunar month, people tend to buy some salted meat; several days before the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, shopping is mainly targeted at ingredients for the Porridge with Nuts and Dried Fruits, such as walnuts, dried persimmons, dates, chestnuts and game of all colors etc. After the tenth day of the month, people begin to buy New Year paintings, portraits of the God of Wealth, decorative hangings, gold and silver foil and burning paper etc. Around the twentieth day, purchasing is focused on materials for "kitchen god worship", such as glutinous sugar and sweet cakes etc. after the 25th day, sesame stems and pine or cypress tree branches are bought for tramping on New Year's eve, symbolizing peace year after year; on the 29th or 30th day of the month, living carps are bought for the big dinner on New Year's eve.
3. Spring Festival couplets 春联
Generally speaking, the couplet has three forms: the spring couplet, hall couplet, and column couplet, often written on red paper or carved on wooden uprights for appreciation.
Some couplets express people's earnest love to their motherland, some describe the beauty of the nature, and some convey a maxim or best wishes for the coming year.
4. New Year paintings 年画
The paintings are called "New Year paintings" because they are mostly posted during the New Year holiday for decoration. The paintings mostly feature auspicious and joyous subjects. Simple lines, bright colors and happy atmosphere are combined to define New Year paintings. Every lunar New Year, almost all Chinese families post two New Year paintings on the front door in the joyous atmosphere, symbolizing good luck and wealth.
5. Reunion dinner 年夜饭
A reunion dinner is held on New Year's Eve of the Chinese New Year, during which family members get together to celebrate. It is very large and traditionally includes dumplings, chicken and pork. Fish is also included, but intentionally not finished, and the remaining fish is stored overnight. The reason for this stems from a pun, as the Chinese phrase 年年有魚/餘; (nián nián yǒu yú, or "every year there is fish/leftover") is a homophone for phrases which mean "be blessed every year" or "have profit every year".
6. The Spring Festival Gala 春晚
The Spring Festival Gala, commonly abbreviated in Chinese as Chunwan, is a Chinese New Year special shown on the eve of Chinese New Year.
The special is a variety show, often featuring musical, dance, comedy, and drama performances. It has become a ritual for many Chinese families, including overseas Chinese, to tune in to the show on Chinese New Year's Eve.
7. Red Envelopes 红包
Red envelopes/packets are money wrapped in red paper given to kids from their parents, grandparents and others as New Year gifts. They are called hongbao (红包) in Mandarin and lai see (利是) in Cantonese. Sending red packets is a well-observed custom at Chinese New Year.
WeChat red envelope became popular during Chinese New Year in recent years. It is an app developed by Tencent in 2014. Its functions include delivering virtual money, checking a transaction history list, and withdrawing cash, which makes handing out red envelopes more convenient and interactive.
