The Australian Embassy Beijing seeks applications from suitably qualified persons to fill the position of Senior Interpreter/ Engagement Officer (LE5) with Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Please see the attached for the position description and selection criteria. We are seeking high quality written applications.

Selection Criteria
Applicants should address all five of the selection criteria below, clearly outlining their claims and specific experience that makes them suitable for this position (maximum 2 pages).
·Tertiary qualifications and superior oral interpretation and written translation skills from Chinese to English and English to Chinese is essential. Experience performing professional interpretation and translation work is required. Formal interpretation and/or translation qualifications preferable.
·Experience in an international environment or with international issues is required. An academic or work background in economics, public policy or international relations is highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate a high-level understanding of China’s political and economic environment and Australia’s interests.
·Demonstrated ability to provide effective administrative, event management and visit support, and possession of requisite skills, including a high level of organisation, ability to meet deadlines and strong attention to detail.
·Proven research and analytical skills and an ability to independently prepare persuasive, logical and succinct written reports.
·Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, adaptability and an ability to cooperate effectively as a member of a busy, high-performing team.

About the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)
The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.
The Department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.
About the position
The Senior Interpreter/Engagement Officer role provides high quality interpretation/translation services for officials at the Australian Embassy in China, including interpreting at formal meetings and representational events, as well as translating formal inwards and outward correspondence and diplomatic communications. The position also liaises with the Chinese system to arrange meetings for officials and provides logistical support for provincial travel and visiting delegations.
The key responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:
·Provide high-quality formal interpretation and translation support to Australian Embassy officials and senior visitors from Australia on a wide range of topics of interest to the Australian Government. Actively maintain and improve level of interpretation and translation proficiency.
·Provide logistical support for the Embassy’s provincial outreach: organise and coordinate meetings and transport, undertake background research, create visit programs and liaise with provincial officials. Undertake regular provincial travel in support of Embassy officials and visiting Australian delegations.
·Provide logistical support to official Australian delegations visiting China. This includes, but is not limited to, coordinating vehicle movements, arranging and coordinating accommodation bookings and creating visit program booklets. Assistance may also be requested from attached agencies to help coordinate high-level Chinese government visits to Australia.
·Work closely with other RVU team members to provide administrative and other support as directed, this includes research and analysis on political and economic topics of interest to the Australian Government and maintenance of corporate records. Some support to attached agencies may also be required.
·Relieve other positions in the RVU team during periods of staff absences.
Qualifications/Experience
Tertiary qualifications and a demonstrated ability to effectively and clearly communicate at a high level (both orally and written) in both English and Mandarin are essential.
Superior oral interpretation and written translation skills from Chinese to English and English to Chinese; ability to capture all nuances.
Proven problem solving skills and ability to develop innovative and high quality programs in support of visiting delegations and the Embassy’s provincial travel agenda. Must demonstrate flexibility, adaptability and initiative.
High-level understanding of China’s political and economic environment and Australia’s interests.
Well-developed ability to undertake research, using both English and Chinese sources, and produce quality analytical reports on issues of interest to the Australian Government, including foreign affairs and trade policy.
Strong ability to prioritise a busy workload, work under pressure and to deadlines with great attention to detail.
Ability to work both independently, under limited supervision, and as part of a team.
High degree of confidence in using Microsoft software, particularly Word and Excel, and ability to use databases and undertake internet-based research.
