BBC Chinese Service is part of the BBC Asia Region which consists of 11 dynamic languages that produce multimedia content in text, video, interactive and audio for radio, online, mobile and Social Media platforms. The Chinese Service delivers content to the Chinese speaking audiences around the world through its desktop and mobile sites, as well as through social media platforms, mainly via BBCChinese.com andBBCUKChina.com
We are looking for people to join a talent pool of Associate Producers from which we can invite people to be trained to work across multimedia platforms – i.e. audio, video and text – with a view to helping BBC Chinese Service output retains its distinctiveness, character and status in its target area.
You will work directly with BBC Chinese producers and assist them in producing our regional and international news coverage. You will also be trained to handle and prepare user-generated content across our multi-platform offer. On a daily basis reporting to the designated Chinese Service producer, you will be coordinating content with journalists in Beijing, Hong Kong, London and potentially in other parts of the world, as well as with counterparts in other services to ensure consistency of output relevant to the target audience.
You will need both fluency and up to date knowledge of spoken and written modern standard Mandarin as first or equivalent language and the ability to type quickly and accurately. Also required is fluency in English including complete comprehension of written and spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively.
You should be familiar with video editing and writing for pictures, knowing social media and adapting radio and TV materials for online.
Previous journalistic experience would be an advantage
These freelance opportunities will be based in London and ideally you will be within easy commuting distance of W1A as shifts may be called at short notice.
Shift work will be required which will include nights, weekends and public holidays, often and short notice and on an adhoc basis, payment is by hourly rate and taxed at source (PAYE) this does NOT constitute a staff contract, freelance / casuals remain external and enter into a casual agreement with the BBC.
The pool of successful candidates would be operational from November 2016 to end of the current financial year and members can be called upon as and when needed.
Appointment to the pool will not entitle candidates to staff contracts in the BBC, these will have to be applied for in the normal way, and neither does it guarantee work.
If you already have a current staff contract with the BBC (continuing or fixed term), you won’t be eligible to apply.
