Presentation and Discussion of the Psychological Aspects of Long Duration Space Missions

This program will be conducted in English.

Studies involving astronauts and cosmonauts working on the Mir and International Space Stations have informed us about important psychological and psychiatric issues that affect crewmembers and mission control personnel who are involved with near-Earth space missions.  However, the extreme distances, increased autonomy, and communication delays that will characterize manned missions beyond the Earth’s neighborhood will introduce additional psychosocial stressors never before experienced.  Please join us at the Beijing American Center for a talk by Dr. Nick Kanas, Professor Emeritus in Psychiatry at University of California, San Francisco, where he will review what we currently know about psychological, psychiatric, and interpersonal issues during on-orbit space missions and extrapolate this knowledge to manned missions to Mars.
