(1993)LGBTQIPride Month Movie Screening and Discussion: The Wedding Banquet (1993)
6:30-June 22nd, Friday, 6:30pm
The Wedding Banquet, released in 1993, is the first major film by Oscar-Awardwinning director Ang Lee and had a strongfollowing among gay Asian-American men and their friends in the 1990s, wellbefore Brokeback Mountain made Ang Lee a star in the larger U.S. LGBTQIcommunity. A quarter century ago, The Wedding Banquet was considered amodern-day, multi-cultural romantic comedy of errors. Its featured character isWai-Tung Gao, a successful New York property developer who has yet to break thenews to his meddlesome Chinese parents that he's gay. Not knowing the truthabout their son, they parade a steady stream of potential brides through hislife via long-distance set-ups. Things become even more complicated when theyannounce to Wai-Tung that they are coming for a surprise visit.
The Wedding Banquet is an excellent study in the environment that LGBTQIAmericans faced in the 1990s regarding sexual orientation, marriage inequality, traditional values and parental expectations. The film also rings true in Chinatoday as people explore how to reconcile the global trend toward LGBTQI freedomand equality with family and cultural pressures.
The film is in English and Mandarin with English subtitles, and there willbe a discussion after the screening with LGBTQI people who will share why theyidentify with characters in the movie.
