In China, “多喝热水” (drink more hot water) has become a popular internet phrase which describes the water drinking habits of Chinese. For most people living in China, hot water is an essential part of their daily life.
They boil water daily and store it in a thermos to keep the water warm for the day.
Drinking iced water or tap water is considered strange, and even seen as ‘unhealthy’ by Chinese people. However, in Australia, most people opt to drink tap water on a daily basis.
But where is the water from?
You may not know that tap water and bottled water are regulated differently; tap water needs to meet much more stringent quality criteria and is monitored far more carefully than bottled water in Australia.
Take Sydney Water as an example, 80 percent of Sydney’s water is from natural sources. It’s filtered to the high standards set by the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. Specialists from Sydney Water monitor the water coming out of the filters 24/7 to ensure the water is safe to drink and additionally water quality scientists conduct up to 70 different tests to confirm the drinking water is of the highest quality.
Here are some natural sources you should know about Australian drinking water.
Lake Burragorang
Warragamba Dam is one of the largest domestic water supply dams in the world. What's even more fascinating is that Lake Burragorang, formed behind Warragamba Dam, is four times larger than Sydney Harbour.

According to Sydney Water, 80 percent of the water supplied to the people of Greater Sydney comes from Lake Burragorang at Warragamba.
Daylesford
Daylesford is a spa town located in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range, within the Shire of Hepburn, Victoria, approximately 115 kilometers north-west of Melbourne. First established in 1852 as a gold-mining town, today Daylesford has a population of around 2,548 as of the 2016 census.

As one of Australia’s few spa towns, Daylesford is a notable tourist destination. The town’s numerous spas, restaurants and galleries are popular alongside the many gardens and country-house-conversion styled bed and breakfast accommodation options.
The broader area around the town, including Hepburn Springs to the north, is known for its natural spring mineral spas and is the location of over 80 percent of Australia's effervescent mineral water reserve.
Tasmanian Rain
In Tasmania, rain water is also a source of drinking water.
Tasmanian Rain is rainwater captured on the pristine north-west coast of the island of Tasmania. The water is collected just minutes from where the World Meteorological Organization records the world's purest air. The rain, has travelled eastward via air currents over Antarctica and 10,000 miles of ocean. As a result, Tasmanian Rain contains only 17 parts per million of dissolved solids.
Australia not only endeavours to create high quality drinking water, but also being creative in customizing their unique hand carry bottles.
You may have seen many round bottles, have you met the flat one?
Ground-breaking design saving the environment
Jesse Leeworthy and Jonathan Byrt, grew up together in a small coastal town south of Melbourne, Australia. Noticing an alarming number of plastic water bottles polluting local waterways and parks, they started looking into the global impact of this problem.
It turned out to be a lot worse than they anticipated 480 billion single-use bottles were consumed in 2016, despite 91% of the world’s population having access to clean drinking water - this should not be the status quo.

Soon, they build up their own mission, to significantly reduce single-use water bottle consumption, and aim to challenge how public think about water consumption and transport.
It got them thinking: what design features are most prevalent in popular products and accessories such as tablets, phones, e-readers, laptops and computer bags? And finally, why are our water bottles round?
