Backend developer

Your role

•As an individual contributor - work closely with your leads, designers, and product managers to deliver great products that delight our 10+ million customers all over the world

•Bring new ideas to the table with respect to how we can streamline processes and build better solutions

•Engage in technical discussions and the design and build-out of new features

•Identify and address performance bottlenecks within the application and broader infrastructure

•Participate in design meetings, interviews, and code reviews

•Passion for performance debugging, benchmarking, building awesome things, and picking up new technologies and skills

Required Experience

•At least 1-2+ years of commercial experience developing complex web-based applications in Java.  If you're a generalist / polyglot programmer, you must be comfortable working in Java during the day-to-day

•Strong Computer Science fundamentals - concurrency, multi-threading, data structures, architecture, and various design patterns are things we deep dive into regularly

•Strong verbal and written communication skills - our engineers are given a lot of responsibility around how solutions are built and drafting design specifications from scratch will be crucial to your success as an engineer at Canva

•A Bachelors in Computer Science or Computer Engineering degree is highly desirable (and generally required, if seeking visa sponsorship)

Android developer

Your roles

•Own the development of Android application, define the direction of the codebase and produce a great experience for our users

•Coordinate and collaborate with the Product and Engineering team to understand problems and come up with creative solutions

•Work closely with the design team to ensure the application meets the Android Material Design guidelines

•Develop and iterate within a lean, yet fast-paced Engineering team

•Resolve bugs based on QA and user feedback

Your skills

•Fluency and experience in Java along with good unit testing practices

•Experience with or desire to work with Kotlin (this is a big plus)

•Advocacy of SOLID object-oriented design principles and have your opinions about the advantages and pitfalls of the different architectural patterns (MVVM, MVC etc)

•Experience and knowledge of the Android platform/SDK and development with Android Studio (including debugging techniques)

•Knowledge of the Material Design guidelines

Your role
