South Australian Premier Steven Marshall
strengthening ties with China.
The newly elected Premier of South Australia has returned from his first official visit to China’s largest city, Shanghai.
The main objectives were to strengthen relationships with Chinese authorities, build export opportunities and forge ahead with the State Government’s plans to establish a trade office in Shanghai.
“South Australia has a longstanding friendship with China, and the new State Government is committed to developing this further,” said Premier Steven Marshall.
“China is our biggest export partner, worth more than $2.3 billion, and it is imperative that the State Government continues to increase trade and investment links with this key market.
“By increasing our trade footprint in countries like China, we will be creating more jobs and investment opportunities at home,” said Mr Marshall.
During his visit to Shanghai, the Premier met with officials from the Shanghai municipal and local authorities including the Mayor of Shanghai, Mr Ying Yong. He also met with the Australian Ambassador to China, a number of high level business leaders and various South Australian exporters who have established strong trade links with China.
“In recent years, South Australia has lost ground in the Chinese market. But the State Liberal Government has an ambitious agenda to improve our export performance,” said Mr Marshall.
“To improve this performance, the government is committed to opening a South Australian trade office in Shanghai to grow exports in the lucrative Chinese market, driving millions of dollars into our economy and creating more jobs.
“Trade offices provide on the ground support for exporters, enabling them to develop the deeper, longer term engagements necessary to proper in foreign markets.
“Put simply, more exports means more South Australian jobs,” said Mr Marshall.
The Premier’s trade visit coincided with the Port Adelaide Football Club’s AFL match against the Gold Coast Suns at Adelaide Arena in Jiangwan Stadium, Shanghai.
The game was broadcast by three major Chinese television stations with an expected direct television audience of more than 8 million viewers. It’s the second time an AFL premiership points match has been played in China, not only promoting our national sport but importantly, lifting the profile of South Australia.
The Port Adelaide Football Club began its engagement and investment strategy with China in 2014 and has steadily gained momentum and built valuable links with businesses and community groups.
The Premier officially opened the Buisiness2Business event hosted by Port Adelaide Football Club and the Chinese Chamber of International Commerce in Shanghai. The initiative connects South Australian and Chinese businesses looking to trade and export and Mr Marshall was able to witness the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Emu Tracks and Xiamen Xinnuofeng.
Another highlight was meeting students from Shanghai Bile High School participating in the Power Footy Program. A new partnership with The University of Adelaide and Port Adelaide Football Club will encourage students in the program to study in Adelaide. The school is one of 21 Chinese schools that offer the Power Footy Program and will be included in the study program.
South Australia’s international education sector has an outstanding reputation. It’s an area that the State Government wants to support and further expand and the work that the University of Adelaide is doing with Port Adelaide Football Club is a great example of what can be achieved through collaboration and strong trade links.
Premier Steven Marshall’s first official visit to Shanghai was certainly not his last. It’s the start of an exciting era of investment, growth and opportunity which will result in a strong South Australian economy and more jobs for locals living in our great state.
