细心的你想必已经发现了，不管是“民国四公子”，还是“民国四大美男”，有一个名字都赫然在列。那就是...张学良！！！

wili少帅张学良于1901年出生于辽宁。他生来英俊潇洒不说，年纪轻轻就手握权柄统帅一方。而且在他的父亲张作霖的教育下，他博览群书，学贯中西。打枪使弹、开汽车、开飞机，都没在怕的。

更重要的是！他讲得一口流利的英语，可以直接与外国人交谈！

“西安事变”谈判时，他用英语与蒋介石的顾问端纳（英籍澳大利亚人）、宋美龄、宋子文交谈，用欧美的历史故事和当时的局势说服他们团结合作共同抗日。

为了学习英语，他参加当地青年教会的英文夜校，跟外籍老师学习最纯正的英文；

他还拜师留美归国的留学生，每天坚持学习英语2个小时。

张学良学习英语起步较晚，因此，他的流利英语靠的正是这样惊人的毅力。

这篇演讲是1931年9月21日，也就是九一八事变后的第三天，张学良在接受西方媒体采访时发表的。在演讲中，他重申东三省自古就是中国领土。

For many years, Japan has opposed China’s unification and economics…(Japan) has tried to tell other nations that Manchuria is not part of China. In fact, it is as much a part of our country as New England is a part of the United States. It is the homeland of 13 million people, and 99 percent of them are Chinese, who will fight to the last man…(部分内容)

后半部分，他又用东北话做了中文翻译，实力诠释交替传译。

说到“西安事变”和英语演讲，就不得不联想到另一位风云人物——宋美龄。

1943年，宋美龄前往美国求援，先后在美国国会、纽约、芝加哥和洛杉矶发表了四场演讲。十来岁就前往美国读书的宋美龄，以漂亮流畅的英文、无与伦比的风度，震撼了当时的美国。

宋的这篇演讲虽然语言简单，但掷地有声。

We in China, like you, want a better world, not for ourselves alone, but for all mankind, and we must have it.

我中国国民，正与诸君形同，不仅为吾人本身，且更为人类全体，希望有一较佳之世界，实则必须有此较佳之世界。

Man’s mettle is tested both in adversity and in success. Twice is true of the soul of a nation.

个人之品德，于困厄中验之，亦于成功中验之。以言一国之精神，倍加真确。

宋美龄英文如此出色，也难怪她能成为蒋介石外交上的左右手。

曾经的“英语大神”可不止上面两位，还有一位精通中英翻译、英语学习和教育，还曾编著民国时期的英语教材。

他就是林语堂。

Lin: China is…the oldest self-governing nation in the world.

林语堂: 中国拥有古老的民主传统，是世界上最古老的自治国家。

Anchor: Oh, wait a moment. You are pulling my leg.

主持人：等等。你在开玩笑嘛。

Lin : No, I am quite serious…Mencius long ago said that all men are created equal and any man is capable of development to the moral stature of the saint emperors.

And that is about 2500 years ago. Mencius further said that in a state, the people are the most important factor and the king is the least important…Mencius is as modern as Thomas Jefferson.

林语堂：不，我是认真的。早在2500年前，孟子就提出了人生而平等的理念，“圣人，与我同类者”。孟子还指出，民贵君轻。孟子和托马斯·杰斐逊一样先进。

Anchor: But wasn’t there aristocracy in ancient China?

主持人：但是古代中国没有贵族阶级吗？

Lin: No, decidedly not. There is Chinese proverb which says all premiers and generals don’t come from old families, which isn’t true of England.

Because there is imperial examinations for civil service, which is in operation for over a thousand years and made it possible for any poor boy with real talent to rise to the very top by selective service.

We didn’t say that in China any boy might become the president, but we did say any boy might become the premier.

林语堂：绝对没有。宰相和将军，不出自门阀贵族，英格兰就不是这样。因为存在逾千年的科举制度，穷人家的孩子，只要有才华，也能位极人臣。在中国，不是所有人都能当皇上，但都有可能做宰相。

再来品一品林语堂翻译的小诗：

I like woman as they are

without any romanticizing

and without any bitter disillusionment

我喜欢女人，就如她们平常的模样

用不着迷恋而神魂颠倒，比之天仙

也用不着因失恋而满腹心酸，比之蛇蝎

是不是很有味道？

如果说民国时期的“大神”们得益于时代对英语的偏爱，下面这位清朝公主的英语演讲就更加令现代人汗颜了。

没错，她就是前段时间因为这条视频“走红网络”的德龄公主。

该视频拍摄于1930年，当时德龄公主44岁。

在演讲中她表示，当今社会正经历着前所未有的变革。她希望国家与国家之间相互理解，相互尊重，只有这样，才能实现全世界的和平。

通过写作和讲课的方式，她向美国人民展示了中华民族灿烂的文化，促进两国人民之间的相互了解。

她也认识到，中国与美国之间还存在着很大的差距，中国人民愿意敞开怀抱，虚心学习。

不同于少帅张学良的坚持不懈，这位晚清公主的流利口语得益于她的成长环境。

"Princess" Der Ling's father, Yu Geng, was a member of the Hanjun Plain White Banner Corps.

德龄公主的父亲裕庚本为汉人，后来入满族汉军正白旗。

After serving as Chinese minister to Japan, he was appointed minister to the French Third Republic for four years in 1899.

裕庚任出使日本特命全权大臣三年后，又担任大清驻法兰西第三共和国公使四年。

He was known for his progressive, reformist views; for his determination to educate his children, including the girls, in western schools, which was highly unusual in their generation.

他思想先进，推崇改革，主张自己的孩子接受西方教育，包括女孩。这在那个年代十分难得。

Yu Geng's daughters, Der Ling and Rong Ling (1882–1973, the future Madame Dan Paochao of Beijing) received a western education, learning French and English, and studying dance in Paris with Isadora Duncan.

裕庚的女儿，德龄和容龄，均接受了西方教育，学习法语和英语。在法国期间，师从现代舞蹈大师伊莎多拉·邓肯，学习舞蹈。

Upon their return to China, Der Ling became the first lady-in-waiting to the Empress Dowager Cixi, as well as interpreting for her when she received foreign visitors.

1902年回到中国后，德龄成为了慈禧太后的女仕臣，并在慈禧太后接待外宾时担任翻译。

Der Ling stayed at court until March 1905. In 1907, Der Ling married Thaddeus C. White, an American.

1905年3月，德龄离开皇宫。1907年，德龄与美国驻沪领事馆副领事迪厄斯·怀特结婚。

Der Ling wrote of her experiences in court in her memoir Two Years in the Forbidden City, which was published in 1911.

德龄将自己的宫廷经历写成了回忆录《清宫二年记》（又名《我在慈禧身边的两年》），并在1911年出版。

In this book, Cixi is not the monster of depravity depicted in the popular press, but an aging woman who loved beautiful things, had many regrets about the past and the way she had dealt with the many crises of her long reign, and apparently trusted Der Ling enough to share many memories and opinions with her.

书中，慈禧并不是像大众媒体报道的那样，是一个腐坏堕落的恶魔，而是一个上了年纪的老太太，也会喜欢漂亮的事物，对往事，对自己经历过的那些国之大难抱有遗憾。很显然，慈禧非常信任德龄，跟她分享了很多自己的回忆和感想。

It provides unique insights into life at the Manchu court and the character of the Empress Dowager Empress. Der Ling continued to write and published seven more books.

这本书为后人研究满族宫廷和慈禧太后提供了珍贵的材料。随后，她又先后出版了7本著作。

Princess Der Ling died in Berkeley, California, as a result of being struck by a car while crossing an intersection. She had recently taught Chinese at University of California, Berkeley.

1944年，德龄公主因一场交通意外，不幸逝世于美国加州伯克利。逝世前，她任教于美国加州大学伯克利分校，教授中文。
