Rosetta Stone
When the Rosetta Stonewas discovered in 1799, the carved characters that covered its surface werequickly copied. Printer's ink was applied to the Stone and white paper laidover it. When the paper was removed, it revealed an exact copy of the text—butin reverse. Since then, many copies or "facsimiles" have been madeusing a variety of materials. Inevitably, the surface of the Stone accumulatedmany layers of material left over from these activities, despite attempts toremove any residue. Once on display, the grease from many thousands of humanhands eager to touch the Stone added to the problem.
An opportunity forinvestigation and cleaning the Rosetta Stone arose when this famous object wasmade the centerpiece of the Cracking Codesexhibition at The British Museum in
1999. When work commencedto remove all but the original, ancient material the stone was black with whitelettering. As treatment progressed, the different substances uncovered wereanalyzed. Grease from human handling, a coating of carnauba wax from the early1800s and printer's ink from 1799 were cleaned away using cotton wool swabs andliniment of soap, white spirit, acetone and purified water. Finally, whitepaint in the text, applied in 1981, which had been left in place until now as aprotective coating, was removed with cotton swabs and purified water. A smallsquare at the bottom left corner of the face of the Stone was left untouched toshow the darkened wax and the white infill.

In his fascinating book Carbon Detox, George Marshall argues thatpeople are not persuaded by information. Our views are formed by the views ofthe people with whom we mix. Of the narratives that mightpenetrate these circles, we are more likely to listen to those that offer ussome reward. A story that tells us that the world is cooking and that we'llhave to make sacrifices for the sake of future generations is less likely to beaccepted than the more rewarding idea that climate change is a conspiracyhatched by scheming governments and venal scientists, and that strong,independent minded people should unite to defend their freedoms.
He proposes that insteadof arguing for sacrifice, environmentalists shouldshow where the rewards might lie: that understanding what the science is sayingand planning accordingly is the smart thing to do, which will protect yourinterests more effectively than flinging abuse at scientists. We shouldemphasize the old-fashioned virtues of uniting in the face of a crisis, ofresourcefulness and community action. Projects like the transition town’snetwork and proposals for a green new deal tell a story which people are morewilling to hear.
